Thematic backgrounds of the songs

The songs on Youngbloods were all written by singer Joel Birch and some of them deal with his own condition. So describes I Hate Hartley a period, put in what Birch in a great emotional crisis, a suicide attempt took and was subsequently admitted to a hospital. Anchors, on the other hand, describes the search and find a place to live. Joel Birch wrote the song shortly before moving from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast to escape the hectic city life. This feeling is also taken up in HMAS Lookback .

Fire or Knive describes his relationship with Christianity and religion in general. He described his family as Christian and spent his school days in an extremely religious school. A background for writing the song is also Birch's path to becoming an avowed atheist . He did not write the song Youngbloods , named after the album, about himself, but for friends and acquaintances who either went through tough times themselves or who have acquaintances who feel this way. Birch said that there were even lines of text that didn't make it into the song, but still have a suitable character. Some of these were written by Ahren Stringer.

Dr. Thunder was written for Birch's former wife, who have since become best friends. In this song he looks for an explanation for his depressive phase. With this song he tried to explain his current situation to her without having to seek a personal conversation. In Olde English 800 , Birch tried to capture the feeling of violence in a depressive phase, taking the view that not only depressed people know this feeling, but that it can be transferred to other diseases and situations.

success

Youngbloods rose to number 6 in the Australian album charts in the week of July 4, 2010 and stayed there for a total of three weeks. It was also nominated for an ARIA Award in the Best Hard Rock / Heavy Metal Album category, but lost to Parkway Drive .

Four years after publication, Youngbloods was awarded a gold record for selling 35,000 records in Australia .

Reviews

Youngbloods was largely received negatively by the German trade press . So Sascha Ganser describes of musikreviews.de the band's music on the album as a mix of youthfulness of Lostprophets and Metalcore -Scharfschnitt à la Underoath . He divides the song structure into "bad verses and good choruses", calls the music predictable and the breakdowns manageable. He feels the screams are toneless. Overall, he gave the album a sobering rating. Pascal Stieler from Metal1.info was similarly disappointed. He wrote that the music was based on Underoath, but moved far below. The group only managed to surprise every now and then and named Trad Nathan’s keyboard game as an example . According to Stieler, the group rarely manages to write lyrics that are not interchangeable. However, Ahren Stringer nullifies this with his clean vocals. The critic comes to the conclusion that The Amity Affliction is next to Asking Alexandria and His Statue Falls another reason why " Emocore " is used as a dirty word these days.

Benjamin from In-your-face.de was more gracious with the album. He describes the songs as nice and names the title song Youngbloods as his personal highlights , which he describes as "hymnic" and the quiet melody part in Dr. Thunder . The album is kept compact with its length. It is "neither a huge thing, but also not a huge blow." Andreas Steiner from Stageload , however, has a less good picture of the album. He describes the music, starting with the instrumentation, the high-pitched clean vocals and ending with the electro inserts, as an overload of stimuli that he ultimately finds embarrassing. He calls the songs all interchangeable. He states that the themes that the musicians take up have already been heard a thousand times. Enrico Ahlig from the German-speaking Metal Hammer was almost enthusiastic and awarded five out of seven possible points for Youngbloods .
