Yuanfuliite is a very rarely occurring mineral from the mineral class of the " borates ". It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system with the chemical composition Mg (Fe 3+ , Al) [O | BO 3 ] and is therefore a magnesium - iron borate with oxygen as additional anions . The elements iron and aluminum indicated in the round brackets can represent each other in the formula ( substitution , diadochie), but are always in the same proportion to the other components of the mineral.

Yuanfuliite only develops small, prismatic-needle-like crystals of black color and up to about two millimeters in length, the surfaces of which have a faint metal to diamond-like whole . It often occurs in the form of granular to massive mineral aggregates . The crystals are nearly opaque ( opaque ) and in thin layers of brown translucent.

Etymology and history

Was first discovered Yuanfuliit in Bor - deposit Zhuanmiao Autonomous County Kuandian in the northeastern Chinese province of Liaoning and described in 1994 by Zouliang Huang and Wang Pu, the mineral after the Chinese professor of geology Yuan Fuli named (1893-1987).

Type material of the mineral is kept in the Beijing Geological Museum .

classification

In the outdated, but partly still in use 8th edition of the mineral classification according to Strunz , the yuanfuliite still belonged to the common mineral class of "carbonates, nitrates and borates" and there to the department of "island borates", where it together with aluminomagnesiohulsite , hulsite , magnesiohulsite , pertsevite , Pinakiolite and warwickite the "Warwickite pinakiolite group" with the system no. V / G.03 formed.

The 9th edition of Strunz's mineral systematics , which has been in effect since 2001 and is used by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA), assigns yuanfuliite to the now independent class of "borates" and there in the department of "monoborates". This is further subdivided according to the type of borate complex and the possible presence of further anions , so that the mineral is classified in the sub-section “BO 3 with additional anions; 1 (Δ) + OH etc. ”can be found, where the“ Warwickit group ”with the system no. 6.AB.20 forms.

The systematics of minerals according to Dana , which is mainly used in the English-speaking world , classifies the yuanfulit as the outdated Strunz systematics in the common class of "carbonates, nitrates and borates" and there in the department of "anhydrous borates". Here you can find it together with Warwickit in the unnamed group 02/24/02 within the sub-section "Anhydrous borates with (A) 2+ BO 2 [XO 3 ]".

Education and Locations

Yuanfuliite forms in metamorphic , magnesium-containing marbles in boron deposits. As accompanying minerals may include anhydrite , apatite , calcite , forsterite , magnetite , phlogopite , Sinhalit , Suanit , pleonaste and various tourmalines occur.

Except for its type locality , the boron deposit Zhuanmiao, and the boron deposit Huayuangou, also located in the northeast Chinese province of Liaoning, the mineral is known so far (as of 2014) only from the area around Inglefield Fjord in northwest Greenland and from the Tayezhnoer ferruginous and boron-containing skarns about 100 km south of Aldan in the highlands of the same name in the Russian Republic of Sakha ( Yakutia ) and the Nuestra Señora del Carmen mines near La Celia in the municipality of Jumilla in the Spanish region of Murcia.

Crystal structure

Yuanfuliite crystallizes orthorhombically in the space group Pnma (space group no. 62) with the average lattice parameters a  = 9.227 (22)  Å ; b  = 3.0910 (78) Å and c  = 9.373 Å as well as 4 formula units per unit cell . Template: room group / 62
