ZDF Musikkanal was the name of a television channel operated by the Second German Television , which began broadcasting on January 1, 1984 as part of the cable pilot project. The station broadcast a moderated program with a thematic focus on music. The programs broadcast came almost exclusively from the archive of the ZDF main program.
The ZDF music channel remained on the air as an independent program until December 31, 1988. From January 1989 it was connected to the 3sat program as a program window and was later fully integrated into 3sat. Until then, it remained as an independent program brand for music broadcasts within 3sat until the end of 1993. With the cessation of broadcasting of the cultural channel Eins Plus organized by ARD on November 30, 1993 and the associated participation of ARD in 3sat from December 1, 1993, an extensive program reform followed, as a result of which the broadcasting of the ZDF music channel was discontinued.
The station was initially only broadcast in the so-called cable pilot projects : from January 1, 1984 in the Ludwigshafen am Rhein cable pilot project , from April 1984 also in Munich , from June 1, 1985 in Dortmund , from August 28, 1985 in Berlin and later in the regular cable network . With the relinquishment of the program's independence, the station could be received throughout Europe as part of 3sat via the Astra 1A and DFS-Kopernikus satellites from 1989 onwards .
As part of the independence, a three-hour evening program was initially offered daily, later this was expanded to up to 6 broadcast hours between 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. With the switch to 3sat, the station was only broadcast on a reduced basis from around 2:30 p.m. to 5:20 p.m. on weekdays, and there were no more broadcasting links on the weekend. Recurring programs were the ZDF hit parade , Disco and PIT. One of the few in-house productions was the studio program Gast im Studio . Folk music programs and classical music were also featured in the program. Occasionally, series with a focus on music were also broadcast, such as the ZDF production from 1980 broadcast in 1988 ... and Huber blows the tuba .
