Zaman Shah

Zaman Shah (* 1770 ; † 1844 ) was from 1793 to 1800 the third ruler ( emir ) of the Durrani Empire in what is now Afghanistan .

Life

Zaman Shah Durrani was the grandson of Ahmad Shah Durrani and the fifth of twenty-three sons of Timur Shah Durrani . He became ruler of the Durrani Empire after the death of his father in 1793. He defeated his brothers as competitors for rule with the help of the Barakzai leader Sardar Payenda Khan . From his last challenger Mahmud he forced an oath of allegiance, to which he gave control over Herat . His sphere of influence thus encompassed the area between Kabul and Herat, but the separation of rule between Kabul as the center of power and the de facto independent Herat was preserved for over a century, the rule over Kandahar was always controversial.

Like his father, Zaman Shah also tried to gain control over India, but failed and led to a conflict with the British. The British arranged for Fath Ali Shah , the Shah of Persia, to raid the Durrani Empire, which prevented Zaman Shah from further attacking India in order to defend his own territory.

In his own country, conditions initially developed well for the Durrani ruler. At first he forced Mahmud of Herat into Persian exile, but he allied himself with Fateh Khan and, with his financial and personal support and the support of Fath Khan Barakzay , the eldest son of Sardar Payenda Khan , conquered Kandahar in 1800 and advanced on Kabul . Zaman Shah quickly returned from his campaign in India, where he had installed the Sikh Ranjit Singh as governor of Lahore . He was captured on the way, handed over to Mahmud, blinded and held captive in Bala Hissar in Kabul from 1800 . Little is known about the last years of his life, he apparently spent the rest of his life, almost 40 years, in prison, a period during which some political upheaval broke out in the area of Afghanistan.
