Zee.One was a German-speaking private broadcaster that broadcasted from July 28, 2016 to May 31, 2020 in Germany , Austria and Switzerland for free. It belonged to Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) and thus to the Indian Essel Group .

Zee.One was ZEEL's biggest launch in 2016 . The broadcast program consisted of Bollywood productions. Their claim was “Zee series with a difference” . After the station was unable to establish itself on the German-speaking market, it was decided to close the station for the end of May 2020. The market share has stagnated between 0.1% and 0.2% for years and thus remained far below expectations. Most recently, the market share of 0.0% was no longer measurable. The station ceased operations on June 1, 2020 shortly after midnight.

program

The program was shown in German .

The program spanned all genres and consists of six different types of programs:

  • Bollywood Films: Three films were shown on premieres each day. In practice, however, this was not true, as there were also days that had no new releases in the broadcast schedule. The parent company ZEEL owns the largest Hindi film library in the world with more than 3,500 productions and 210,000 hours of programming. The films will also be adapted to the German market, ie they will be shortened. The revised versions should correspond to the viewing habits of the German TV audience.
  • Bollywood music videos: Since most Bollywood productions are musicals , a film contains several songs that can also be published separately. Due to the large film library, the broadcaster has access to thousands of music videos. The music videos were broadcast throughout the day in the style of well-known music channels under the name "Bollywood Music" in the original sound with subtitles. In addition, music videos were shown as part of the program "Bolly.Music Show" hosted by Yvonne Monyer, which viewers requested by phone at the time of the broadcast.
  • Bollywood series: TV productions by the Indian sister stations, such as Zee TV , were shown in German, such as the two series with which the station started: "Buddha" is about the life of Siddhartha Gautama and "Jodha Akbar" is a Historical drama about Jodhaa Bai and Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar . In addition, since January 2017 another series called "Tashan-e-Ishq - Young Hearts" has been broadcast. The Indian crime series "Agent Raghav - Mission in Mumbai" has been broadcast since June 12th. Other series were also Badho - Bahu - Schwer am in love, Jamai Raja, The King and His Immortal Love and Tere Bin. In addition, German in-house productions were also planned.
  • TV shows: There should be produced in Germany TV shows are sent. Starting in January 2017, a half-hour program with yoga exercises was broadcast with “Namaste Yoga” .
  • Documentary: It should produced in Germany Documentaries are sent.
  • Magazine programs : The program “Look Who's talking with Niranjan”, which is well known in India and is moderated by Niranjan Iyengar, has been broadcast since 2016. The English-language talk show "Starry Nights" with Komal Nahta, which was launched in 2017 and was produced in India, was also broadcast in German in the same year under the name "Stars hautnah". In addition, culture magazines produced in Germany should be broadcast. A format moderated by the Indian-born Nandini Mitra was planned and should start in January 2017. The original name "Bollywood Blizz" was discarded due to legal problems. The format was not broadcast, however.

The songs, including dance interludes, were partially cut out of the films. This has created anger among Bollywood film lovers and sparked protests on Facebook. For this reason, among other things, days and program slots in which the films are broadcast in their original length were planned.

For marketing purposes, the program was also divided into seven different "labels":

  • Bolly.Love: Romantic comedies ("Rom-Coms") were shown on Thursdays at 8:15 pm ( primetime ) .
  • Bolly.Power: On Fridays at 8:15 pm (primetime) excellent blockbuster hits were shown.
  • Bolly.Star: Films with the most popular Bollywood actors were shown on Saturdays at 7:30 p.m.
  • Bolly.Action: Action films were shown on Fridays and Saturdays after 10:00 p.m.
  • Bolly.Family: Family films were shown on Saturdays and Sundays the evening before .
  • Bolly.Series: Series were shown Monday through Sunday during the day .
  • Bolly.Musik: Music videos and Bollywood dance scenes were shown Monday through Sunday afternoons .

Logos

On October 16, 2017, the Zee One logo was changed from the iconic Z to a simplified circle with the station name. This change follows the international rebranding of the Zee TV chain.

marketing

Shah Rukh Khan , the Zee.One brand ambassador

Bollywood films have already been shown on German television ( VOX , RTL II ) and in German cinemas ( Rapid Eye Movies ). In addition to the Indians living in Germany , they are also popular with non-Indian women. According to its own information, Zee.One also focuses mainly on "women aged 14 to 59". This target group has a high brand affinity and purchasing power.

The advertising running on the station should be tailored to this target group and come from the area of “fashion and shopping”. The brand color is also based on the target audience. The “labels” Bolly.Power , Bolly.Star and Bolly.Action also target men between the ages of 14 and 59. With the “Label” Bolly.Family , even “adults from 12 years” are counted among the target group.

Since it is unusual in India to market advertising-financed channels themselves, the operators lack experience in this area. For this reason, the exclusive TV marketing mandate for Zee.One was passed on to Sky Media . Sky Media was also responsible for the marketing of the station's on-demand offer . At the end of 2018, Zee.One switched from Sky to Visoon. In addition to classic TV advertising, Zee.One made various forms of sponsorship available to its customers. In addition, infomercials with a content-related connection to the broadcaster were presented on the broadcast between 6 a.m. and 8:45 a.m.

In order to send a brand signal , the broadcaster announced on July 14, 2016 that Shah Rukh Khan had been hired as a brand ambassador. He is considered one of the most famous Bollywood actors worldwide and is already known to German audiences through television broadcasts and screenings of his films.

To increase its own awareness, Zee.One sponsored the 13th Indian Film Festival Stuttgart in the year it started broadcasting .

reception

The start of broadcasting was scheduled for July 28, as the 2016 European Football Championship will end on July 10 and it will be difficult to gain market share until then. In order to achieve high market shares, it was also decided that the station will be shown on free-to-air television . In this way, the operator expects a technical distribution of at least 80% of all TV households on the first day.

In order to guarantee comprehensive availability, a long-term contract was signed with SES Platform Services , which includes satellite broadcasting via Astra (19.2 ° East) and technical services such as encoding, multiplexing and uplink . The station has thus reached 18 million households in Germany and 2.5 million households in Austria and Switzerland. The transmitter was switched on via Astra 1KR in something below SD quality (544x 576i ).

The station was also broadcast via cable and IPTV . Corresponding live streams were available for free reception over the Internet .

Bolly.Thek

At the end of February 2017, a media library called Bolly.Thek was launched on the broadcaster's website. Movies can be viewed via streaming for up to seven days after they have been broadcast . For individual series, the broadcaster also provides all episodes. It is streamed free of charge with commercial breaks in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Companies

Zee.One was operated by Asia TV GmbH , a sister company of the British Asia TV Limited , which is directly linked to Zee Entertainment Enterprises and is therefore part of the Essel Group . The transmitter was located in Munich . Friederike Behrends was managing director (Business head) and CEO of Asia TV GmbH and responsible at the same time the function of CEO German speaking countries in the Asia TV Ltd . Thomas Vink is Head of Programming and is responsible for acquisition, program development, in-house productions and creative solutions for the station. Stefan Barchfeld was Head of Commercial and Sales.

A double-digit million euro amount should be invested in the transmitter. According to Neeraj Dhingra , CEO Europe of Asia TV Ltd. further branch channels should follow in Germany in the medium term.

Polish branch

In the course of 2017, a Polish branch of the station was to be launched. The program is to be specially adapted to the Polish audience. Pawel Kolasa was to manage the business in Poland as Country Manager . These plans were not implemented.

Trivia

Although the station discontinued its program on June 1, 2020 and an ASTRA notice loop has been broadcast on the previous ASTRA satellite frequency since then, the EPG of the station with the planned program was still broadcast weeks afterwards.

Until shortly before the broadcasting operations ceased, there were information trailers for film broadcasts in June, although at this point in time the broadcaster had officially announced the end of June 1, 2020.
