Content orientation

The magazine for the history of ideas publishes articles from various specialist areas. In the self-portrayal it says: “The magazine for the history of ideas asks about the changeable nature of ideas, be they philosophical, religious, political or literary.” Make a start in the editorial . Why we're starting a magazine for the history of ideas. the editors explain the claim to pursue culturally influential ideas in their development and change and to question their significance for the present. The editors see themselves in the tradition of the Journal of the History of Ideas founded by Arthur Lovejoy in 1940 , the political conceptual history of Erich Rothacker , Joachim Ritters and Reinhart Koselleck and the metaphor history of Hans Blumenberg .

Each issue has a thematic focus on which various articles are published. In addition to the main topic, there are also the categories conversation, essay, thought picture, archive and concept & criticism . The archive deals with a document relating to the history of ideas, in the autumn 2007 edition, for example, with a previously unknown letter by the religious philosopher and historian Gershom Scholem . Under Concept & Criticism you can find discussions about current publications, controversies and scientific conferences.

Reactions

The first issue of the Zeitschrift für Ideengeschichte was presented at a press conference on February 23, 2007 and led to numerous reactions in the German-speaking media. There were reports in the Welt , the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the Zeit , the Spiegel and the Neue Zürcher Zeitung . The interdisciplinary orientation of the magazine and its good readability for interested laypeople were particularly highlighted. For example, an article in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung states : “Operating between different humanities disciplines, the history of ideas has so far [...] been an academic all-rounder that the public has hardly sought. A newly founded magazine on the history of ideas proves that it need not shy away from them - at least not if the public is still "educated".
