Zeltschach (Slovenian: Selce / Selice / Selišće what as much as village, settlement means) is a place in Carinthia . The somewhat remote, historically significant settlement was a separate municipality for a long time and is now a cadastral municipality of Friesach in the Sankt Veit an der Glan district . The village of Zeltschach has 156 inhabitants (2001 census).

geography

The municipality of Zeltschach extends in mountainous terrain east of Friesach. The place itself is about five kilometers from Friesach city center at 817 m above sea level. In addition to the town of Friesach in the west, the market towns of Guttaring in the south and Hüttenberg as well as the nearby pilgrimage site of Waitschach are to be mentioned as neighboring villages of Zeltschach .

history

Even the early documentary mention in 898 testifies to its historical importance in the Middle Ages . This year, Emperor Arnulf of Carinthia gave his follower Zwentibolch fiefdom, which later passed to Hemma von Gurk , who was married to Margrave Wilhelm an der Sann, who was especially wealthy in Lower Styria . Later, the Lords of Peggau, named after a castle on the Mur in Styria, owned the Zeltschach estate, which came from the Gurk bishop as a fief.

The county of Friesach and Zeltschach included the area of the Flattnitz in the west, the Upper Murtal in the north, the Gurktal in the south and Zeltschach in the east.

The mining of silver and iron ore on the Zeltschachberg and Dobritsch from the 13th century onwards , which continued into the 19th century on the Gaisberg, helped the place to prosper and also favored the development of the nearby town of Friesach. Among other things, the Friesacher Pfennig was minted from the silver .

Zeltschach existed as an independent political municipality until 1973, when it went up in the course of a municipality reform in the municipality of Friesach.

Buildings

The Gothic parish church in Zeltschach has a Romanesque tower and a richly profiled west portal. The altars are assigned to the Rococo , the high altar dates from 1756. Flower and tendril paintings date from around 1500.

To the west of Zeltschach, on the ditch slope of the Heisleinbach, are the remains of a castle ruin (tower remains). This castle could have been the seat of the Counts of Zeltschach, from whose line Hemma comes.

coat of arms

The former coat of arms of Zeltschach, which was awarded to the community at that time on June 15, 1960 and which expired on January 1, 1973 when it was united with Friesach, had the following official blazon : "Triangular shield with a red head, below black and white [= silver] three times saved. ” The flag was red-white-black with an incorporated coat of arms.

The seals of the Lords of Peggau, which can be found on documents from the years 1234 and 1245, in particular the very well-preserved latter, served as the basis. The tinctures that are not recognizable in these seals were derived from the coat of arms of the Weißpriachers , who are likely to have been related to the Albeckers and who in turn were the closest relatives of the Zeltschach-Peggauer.
