The Suite Life of Zack & Cody is an Emmy award nominated American children's television series that airs on the Disney Channel. This Disney Channel Original Series premiered on March 18, 2005, and was one of the first five shows available on the iTunes Store.[1]

The series stars Dylan and Cole Sprouse. They play Cody and Zack Martin, identical twins, whose single mother, Carey, has a gig as headlining singer at the Tipton Hotel. Now they live in a five-star hotel in Boston as a provision of her contract. The series has spawned two video games: one for the Nintendo DS entitled The Suite Life of Zack & Cody: Tipton Trouble[2] and a titular release for the Game Boy Advance.[3] The show was originally called The Suite Life, which is co-created by Danny Kallis, who was a writer, producer, and director for the TV series, Smart Guy; and Jim Geoghan, who was a writer and producer for the TV series, Family Matters. [4]

The series is the third Disney Channel Original to have gone over the 65 episode limit, the first was That's So Raven going to 100 episodes and the second was Kim Possible. The third season of the series premiered on June 23, 2007. The show also airs on Saturday mornings on ABC.

Main characters

Zachary "Zack" Martin (Dylan Sprouse) is always getting into trouble. Zack is usually dressed in skater clothes. He often sets out to get exactly what he wants. He has an obsession with girls, and a crush on Maddie in the first season (it seems to fade in the second). He occasionally sticks up for his brother, as seen in the episodes Election and Kept Man. He wants to be like his dad, Kurt. Other than in wood shop, he is known for not doing well in school.

Cody Martin (Cole Sprouse) is the intellectual, mature, and sensitive twin, but he often plays along with his brother's crazy schemes. He shows less interest in girls than his brother. He does seem to flirt a lot with a girl named Barbara Brownstein, but they are constantly competing on who is smarter. He has shown a passion for baking, cleaning, and cooking, as well as mime and dance. Cody is portrayed as easily frightened, but has a meaner side, portrayed in several episodes. Other than woodshop Cody is known for doing well in school.

Madeline "Maddie" Fitzpatrick (Ashley Tisdale) is the teenage candy-counter girl at the Tipton Hotel, a cashier at the Cluck Bucket, and manages the Camp Tipton Daycare Center. While she comes from a lower class family, Maddie is very hard-working (she aspires to attend law school), outspoken, and intelligent. She attends a private school at Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow. Maddie is London's closest friend, though London often treats her like a servant, as in Footloser, usually bribing her with money. Maddie also babysits Zack and Cody. Zack had a crush on her, but it has decreased since the middle of Season 2. She had gotten a summer job as a camp counseler at Camp Heaven on Earth. Her full name is "Madeline Margaret Genevieve Miranda Catherine Fitzpatrick."

London Tipton, (Brenda Song) is the daughter of Wilfred Tipton, the owner of the Tipton Hotel. London is a dim-witted, spoiled, rich teenager with her own private suite at the Tipton Hotel in Boston, complete with a few closets (each with their own talking mirror) and a kitchen which takes up most of the floor. Moreover, she claims that everything that she has worn, including her diapers, were made by famous designers. She transferred to the same private school as Maddie in the episode Forever Plaid, due to poor attendance at her old school. She dislikes her step-moms and talks to Mr. Moseby and Maddie about her problems. When happy she usually claps her hands repeatedly while saying her catchphrase, "Yay me!" London often mentions her frenemy Portia Tenenbaum. Though it seems like London may lead the ultimate rich-girl life, her childhood was not perfect - her dad was almost always away on business, so she was never able to get close to her own family. London Tipton is a parody of Paris Hilton, which is mentioned in Forever Plaid when her teacher says "I'm talking to the spoiled hotel heiress." London responds by saying, "Is Paris Hilton in this class?"

Marion Moseby (Phill Lewis) is the somewhat-uptight manager of the Tipton, who speaks with a wide vocabulary and an urbane vernacular but is often annoyed by the twins' schemes. Though he acts as though he does not care about the boys, he actually has a great deal of affection for them. In the episode The Ghost of 613, it is revealed that he started out at the Tipton as a bellhop back in the 1970s.

Carey Marie Martin (Kim Rhodes) is a headlining singer at the Tipton as well as the mother of Zack and Cody. She is a divorced mother, wise, kind, but somewhat aggressive towards the twins when they misbehave. She seems to love the twins a lot. Arwin Quentin Hawkhauser has a crush on her, revealed in the episode The Prince & The Plunger, and she has a younger sister, as mentioned in Moseby's Big Brother. She often dreams about George Clooney. Carey found her talent for singing by mistake when she was at a talent show doing stand-up comedy, stated in the episode Footloser. She tries to keep the boys away from trouble, but she never prevails. Later in the second season, she changed her hair color from blonde to reddish-brown multiple times. As of Season 3, she has kept her brown hair and pulled her hair back in a small ponytail.

Settings

The Tipton Hotel is where Zack, Cody, Carey, and London all live, and where the majority of the other major characters in the series work. It is the main setting for the series, particularly the basement, the Tipton's 5-star restaurant, the lobby, the game room, the Martins' suite on the 23rd floor, and London Tipton's penthouse.

Buckner Middle School

During the second season, the series has started using the younger characters' schools as locations. Zack and Cody attend Buckner Middle School and their school team is the Badgers as revealed in the episode "Election" and "Nurse Zack".

Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow Catholic School

Maddie, London, Corrie, and Mary Margaret attend the Catholic School - Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow.

Other places in Boston

Scenes also take place in several other places in Boston, including Fenway Park, a movie theater, Maddie's home, the local shopping mall, a bowling alley, a miniature golf course, and Liberty Park, the park across the street from the Tipton Hotel.

Trivia

  • The original title of The Suite Life of Zack & Cody was Dylan and Cole but never aired with that title.
  • The original role for Ashley Tisdale was Lena Fitzpatrick when the original name of the show was Dylan and Cole.
  • The original role for Brenda Song was Paris Tipton when the original name of the show was Dylan and Cole.
  • In the episode where Zack needs a job, Arwin says he needs a left hand man, and Zack corrects him by saying you mean right hand man, Arwin then continues by showing his left hand taped up and saying that it is not the best way to stop a revolving door, when it should really be his other hand (Right) taped for the scene to be accurate. He then hits his left hand and says, "Now I need a right", when it was his right hand he just crushed, and said it was his left.
  • In TSL, Bob is their friend, in real life, Charlie Stewart is their next door neighbor and friend.
  • The Martins' suite is complete with a kitchen and a bedroom, but so far no other suites with a kitchen have been shown.
  • Whenever an event is happening, and someone is riding the elevator going up, they usually stop at the 23rd floor, even if they are not visiting Zack, Cody, or Carey.
  • In the episode "Twins at the Tipton", Bob tells Cody that his girlfriend Irma dumped him. Cody doesn't believe him, but Bob tells him that Irma told Kim who told Phill who told Ashley who told Brenda who told Dylan who told Cole who told him that it was over. Aside from Irma and Bob, all names of the kids in the gossip line are the names of the six primary actors on the show, in descending order.
  • Also in the episode "Twins at the Tipton" the twins, Jessica, and Janice were only staying in Boston for a short time. Although, in the episode "Ask Zack", they both work on the school newspaper, they were Zack and Cody's dates in "scary movie" and Zack and Cody's dance partners in "Loosely Ballroom".
  • Many episode names come from phrases or pop culture, including "Heck's Kitchen" and "What the Hey".
  • Carey Martin has not sung since she dyed her hair, but it is confirmed that she will, her singing being visible in the season three opening credits. She also hasn't told a boyfriend story.
  • One particular vase in the Tipton lobby is frequently knocked off its table; Mr. Moseby or Esteban always saves it from breaking with a diving catch.
  • The twins went to Buckner Middle School in the first episode and "Crushed" of Season 1. However, they weren't shown going to school again until Season 2.
  • Goof - In the scene taking place in the gameroom ("Have a Nice Trip") you can see a kid "playing" an arcade game. You see him waving his hand above the buttons, not hitting them. (Just like when you see someone playing a video game while randomly mashing buttons, but no real action on screen.)
  • In the episode of "Miniature Golf," when the lady tells Zack he's" just 18 holes of fun," if you listen closely you can hear the song "Got Served" when Zack, Cody, and Max danced on TV.
  • In the episode "Free Tippy", the Tipton's policy of retiring employees at age 65 is a reference to Disney's one-time policy of cancelling shows after the 65th episode.
  • In "Have a Nice Trip", Kyle Massey is seen playing a game in the arcade.
  • In the episode "Graduation" Maddie says that Holly is the little girl that conned her out of her watch, but as seen in episode "Have a Nice Trip" she only conned her out of her candy supply. This may have been done offscreen when she wanted to get the candy back, but she offers to bet Maddie all the candy back for her watch.
  • The Gym In Maddie & London's school is the exact same gym as in Zack & Cody's school.

Theme song

The theme song for The Suite Life of Zack and Cody is called "Here I Am" and was written by John Adair and Steve Hampton, who also wrote the theme song for Phil of the Future. It was sung by Loren Ellis and The Drew Davis Band. The original theme song was going to be "Grow Up" by Simple Plan. However, it was changed to "Here I Am" at the last minute.[citation needed]
