The Suite Life of Zack & Cody is an American children's television series that airs on the Disney Channel. This Disney Channel Original Series premiered on March 18, 2005, and was one of the first five shows available on the iTunes Store.[1]

The series stars Dylan and Cole Sprouse. They play Cody and Zack Martin, identical twins, whose single mother, Carey, has a gig as headlining singer at the Tipton Hotel. Now they live in a five-star hotel in Boston as a provision of her contract. The series has spawned two video games: one for the Nintendo DS entitled The Suite Life of Zack & Cody: Tipton Trouble[2] and a titular release for the Game Boy Advance.[3] The show was originally called The Suite Life, which is co-created by Danny Kallis, who was a writer, producer, and director for the TV series, Smart Guy; and Jim Geoghan, who was a writer and producer for the TV series, Family Matters. [4]

The series is the third Disney Channel Original to have gone over the 65 episode limit and second to get 100 episodes, the first was That's So Raven going to 100 episodes and the second was Kim Possible. The third season of the series premiered on June 23, 2007. The show also airs on Saturday mornings on ABC.

Main characters

Zack Martin (Dylan Sprouse) is always getting into trouble. Zack is usually dressed in skater clothes. He often sets out to get exactly what he wants. He has an obsession with girls. He has a huge crush on Maddie in the first season, though from the second season onward, little is said concerning whether he still has a crush on her. He occasionally sticks up for his brother, as seen in the episodes Election, Kept Man and who's the boss. He wants to be like his dad, Kurt. Other than in wood shop, he is known for not doing well in school.

Cody Martin (Cole Sprouse) is the intellectual, mature, and sensitive twin, but he often plays along with his brother's crazy schemes. He shows less interest in girls than his brother. He does seem to flirt a lot with a girl named Barbara Brownstein, but they are constantly competing on who is smarter. He has shown a passion for baking, cleaning, and cooking, as well as mime and dance. Cody is portrayed as easily frightened, but has a meaner and greedier side, portrayed in several episodes. Other than woodshop Cody is known for doing well in school.

Maddie Fitzpatrick (Ashley Tisdale) is the teenage candy-counter girl at the Tipton Hotel, a cashier at the Cluck Bucket, and manages the Camp Tipton Daycare Center. While she comes from a lower class family, Maddie is very hard-working (she aspires to attend law school), outspoken, and intelligent. She attends a private school at Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow. Maddie is London's closest friend, though London often treats her like a servant, as in Footloser, usually bribing her with money. Maddie also babysits Zack and Cody. Zack has a huge crush on her in Season 1, though from the second season onward, little is said concerning whether Zack still has a crush on her. She had gotten a summer job as a camp counselor at Camp Heaven on Earth. Her full name is "Madeline Margaret Genevieve Miranda Catherine Fitzpatrick."

London Tipton, (Brenda Song) is the daughter of Wilfred Tipton, the owner of the Tipton Hotel. London is a dim-witted, spoiled, rich teenager with her own private suite at the Tipton Hotel in Boston, complete with a few closets (each with their own talking mirror) and a kitchen which takes up most of the floor. Moreover, she claims that everything that she has worn, including her diapers, were made by famous designers. She transferred to the same private school as Maddie in the episode Forever Plaid, due to poor attendance at her old school. She dislikes her step-moms and talks to Mr. Moseby and Maddie about her problems. When happy she usually claps her hands repeatedly while saying her catchphrase, "Yay me!" London often mentions her frenemy Portia Tenenbaum. Though it seems like London may lead the ultimate rich-girl life, her childhood was not perfect - her dad was almost always away on business, so she was never able to get close to her own family. London Tipton is a parody of Paris Hilton, which is mentioned in Forever Plaid when her teacher says "I'm talking to the spoiled hotel heiress." London responds by saying, "Is Paris Hilton in this class?"

Marion Moseby (Phill Lewis) is the somewhat-uptight manager of the Tipton, who speaks with a wide vocabulary and an urbane vernacular but is often annoyed by the twins' schemes. Though he acts as though he does not care about the boys, he actually has a great deal of affection for them. In the episode The Ghost of 613, it is revealed that he started out at the Tipton as a bellhop back in the 1970s.

Carey Martin (Kim Rhodes) is a headlining singer at the Tipton as well as the mother of Zack and Cody. She is a divorced mother, wise, kind, but somewhat aggressive towards the twins when they misbehave. She seems to love the twins a lot. Arwin Quentin Hawkhauser has a crush on her, revealed in the episode The Prince & The Plunger, and she has a younger sister, as mentioned in Moseby's Big Brother. She often dreams about George Clooney. Carey found her talent for singing by mistake when she was at a talent show doing stand-up comedy, stated in the episode Footloser. She tries to keep the boys away from trouble, but she never prevails. Later in the second season, she changed her hair color from blonde to reddish-brown multiple times. As of Season 3, she has kept her brown hair and pulled her hair back in a small ponytail. When she is trying to teach the boys a lesson (Or in some cases other characters) she uses a story from her past, which is always boyfriend related, which leads to the boys or the other characters groaning.

Production

The Suite Life of Zack and Cody was created by Danny Kallis and Jim Geoghan. Production of the first season, which contained 26 episodes, began in fall 2004. The series premiered on March 18, 2005 and held the record of the highest-rated Disney Channel premiere (but was later beaten out by Hannah Montana in 2006 and Cory in the House in 2007). The series was so popular that Disney Channel ordered 39 episodes for a second season, which brought the total to 65, the usual limit of episodes Disney normally allows their series to go. During the second season, The Suite Life took part in a tri-episode crossover with fellow Disney Channel Original Series Hannah Montana and That's So Raven. The crossover, entitled That's So Suite Life of Hannah Montana, aired on July 28, 2006. The show is currently broadcasting its third season, which began on June 23, 2007. All of the episodes that have aired belong to one story involving summer vacation. Ashley Tisdale's character Madeline Fitzpatrick only appears in four of the six season three episodes that have already aired, makes a cameo appearance in two episodes, and does not appear at all in two episodes. This is due to her commitment to filming High School Musical 2.

Settings

Tipton Hotel

A front view of the Tipton

The Tipton Hotel is where Zack, Cody, Carey, and London all live, and where the majority of the other major characters in the series work. It is the main setting for the series, particularly the basement, the Tipton's 5-star restaurant, the lobby, the game room, the Martins' suite on the 23rd floor, and London Tipton's penthouse.

Buckner Middle School

During the second season, the series has started using the younger characters' schools as locations. Zack and Cody attend Buckner Middle School and their school team is the Badgers as revealed in the episode "Election" and "Nurse Zack".

Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow Catholic School

Maddie, London, Corrie, and Mary Margaret attend the Catholic School - Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow.

Paul Revere Mini Mart

Zack and Cody work for a man named Wayne Wormser at a local mini market.

Other places in Boston

Scenes also take place in several other places in Boston, including Fenway Park, a movie theater, Maddie's home, the local shopping mall, a bowling alley, a miniature golf course, the Goose Lodge, as seen in "Not So Suite Sixteen", and Liberty Park, the park across the street from the Tipton Hotel.

Camp Heaven On Earth

A camp for female unruly misfits. All the cabins are poorly constructed. Maddie is working there for her summer job and is friends with the girls there although they prank her very often.

Trivia

  • The Martins' suite is complete with a kitchen and a bedroom, but so far no other suites with a kitchen have been shown.
  • Whenever an event is happening, and someone is riding the elevator going up, they usually stop at the 23rd floor, even if they are not visiting Zack, Cody, or Carey.
  • In the episode Twins at the Tipton, Bob tells Cody that his girlfriend Irma dumped him. Cody doesn't believe him, but Bob tells him that Irma told Kim who told Phill who told Ashley who told Brenda who told Dylan who told Cole who told him that it was over. Aside from Irma and Bob, all names of the kids in the gossip line are the names of the six primary actors on the show, in descending order
  • The twins went to Buckner Middle School in the first episode and Crushed of Season 1. However, they weren't shown going to school again until Season 2.
  • In the episode Free Tippy, the Tipton's policy of retiring employees at age 65 is a reference to Disney's one-time policy of canceling shows after the 65th episode.
  • The Tipton logo is taken off of the logo for Fairmont Hotels which operate the Vancouver, BC hotel used in the exterior scenes of the Tipton and Toronto's Royal York hotel which is the model for the lobby and the rooms. The traditional F logo is used in the episode The Suite Smell of Excess.
  • In the episode Footloser, Cody tells Max that she dances just better than that "girl" in the Missy Elliot video, Alyson Stoner who plays Max has appeared in a number of Missy Elliot videos.
  • in "Graduation" Maddie says that Holly is the girl that conned her out of her watch where she really only conned her out of her candy supply as seen in "Have a Nice Trip", when Maddie says she has no more candy to play another game of cards Holly's reply was "I like your watch", but than she walked away with no watch just a rediculessly large bag of candy.

Theme song

The theme song for The Suite Life of Zack and Cody is called "Here I Am" and was written by John Adair and Steve Hampton, who also wrote the theme song for Phil of the Future. It was sung by Loren Ellis and The Drew Davis Band. The original theme song was going to be "Grow Up" by Simple Plan. However, it was changed to "Here I Am" at the last minute.[citation needed]
