For the Eurovision Song Contest 1992, the song "Why Me?", written and composed by Johnny Logan and performed by Linda Martin, was chosen to represent Ireland after it won the national final selection. Held on 29 March at the Opera House in Cork, the event was hosted by Pat Kenny. Eight songs competed, and the winner was selected by ten regional juries.[1]

Linda Martin's appearance in the 1992 national final was her ninth. She had previously represented Ireland in the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest, taking second place behind Sweden's "Diggi-Loo Diggi-Ley."

"Why Me?" was performed in 17th position on the night of the contest. During the voting sequence, the three English language songs, "Why Me?", United Kingdom's "One Step Out of Time" and Malta's "Little Child," quickly captured the top of the scoreboard. Though both Malta and United Kingdom received more "douze points" than did Ireland, "Why Me?" won the contest with 155 points.[2][3]

This was Ireland's fourth win, and the first of its record-breaking set of Eurovision victories that would play out over the following four years.
