1966 NFL expansion draft
The National Football League started its first franchise in the Deep South on June 30, 1965 when NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle granted ownership to Rankin Smith Sr.[1] The expansion Atlanta Falcons were awarded the first pick in the 1966 NFL Draft, supplemented with the final pick in each of the first five rounds.[1] To increase the competitiveness of the new franchise, the league granted the Falcons the opportunity to select 42 more players from existing franchises in the 1966 NFL Expansion Draft, held on February 15, 1966.[1]
