The characters of SpongeBob SquarePants from left to right: Plankton, Mr. Krabs, Sandy, SpongeBob, Squidward, Patrick, Gary, and a jellyfish.

Main characters

SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob SquarePants, the title character of the series is a kitchen sponge. SpongeBob is a happy-go-lucky character who works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab restaurant. He also attends Mrs. Puff's Boating School and has failed the test many times. SpongeBob's best friend is a starfish named Patrick. He enjoys jelly-fishing, blowing bubbles with Patrick, and often gets into a lot of mischief. SpongeBob lives in a pineapple on 124 Conch Street. He also, won employee of the month over 300 times. Two of Spongebob's ancestors are seen: SpongeGar of the Permian period and SpongeBuck SquarePants of 1882's Dead Eye Gulch. He is voiced by Tom Kenny.

Patrick Star

Patrick Star is a character in SpongeBob SquarePants. He is somewhat chubby, friendly, and somewhat stupid. He is sometimes aggressive and is SpongeBob's best friend. He and SpongeBob have apparently known each other since infancy, and they share many interests (jelly fishing, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, bubble blowing, etc.). In the episode "Rule of Dumb," it is revealed that he and SpongeBob's pet snail, Gary, are cousins, and that he is a prince. Patrick is always stupid, and he often convinces SpongeBob to accompany him in dangerous, fruitless and hare brained activities, such as playing near fish hooks and eating whole pumpkins. However, in the episode "The Bully," it is noted that he went to community college. His stupidity can be so potent that he sometimes suffers from lapses of memory (like trying to eat a chocolate bar twice) and complete shutdown of any thought whatsoever. In spite of the disastrous outcomes of Patrick's ideas, SpongeBob constantly attests to Patrick's genius and consults the starfish for advice and guidance. Patrick is revealed to be able to play many instruments like the belly drum. Patrick has no job or trade and spends most of his time sleeping and watching television under his rock house or playing with SpongeBob. He does give advice to SpongeBob, although it's not usually practical. When he tries to find work, it is shown that he has little practical skill; for example in "Big Pink Loser," he struggles with tasks such as sweeping or opening a jar. Patrick lives two houses down from SpongeBob (and lives next to Squidward) under a rock at 120 Conch Street. He has also been a criminal many times in the series, like in the episodes "Life of Crime" and "SpongeBob Meets the Strangler" among others. Patrick has a mother and a father, whose names are Herb and Margie, respectively, but they are rarely seen in the series. Three of Patrick's ancestors are spotted: Patar of the Permian period, Pecos Patrick of 1882's Dead Eye Gulch and Patrick Revere of the Medieval Britain. Patrick is voiced by Bill Fagerbakke.

Squidward Tentacles

Squidward Tentacles is usually annoyed by SpongeBob and Patrick and who, despite his name, is said to be an octopus but some people call him a squid by the creators of the SpongeBob SquarePants,[1] but refers to himself as a squid.[2] Squidward is known in the series for his selfish and unenthusiastic personality and belief that he is better than his undersea neighbors as well everyone else in Bikini Bottom. Squidward generally uses two of his tentacles as arms and groups the other four into two pairs of legs. While his neighbors SpongeBob and Patrick are generally cheerful, Squidward is very pessimistic and morose. He has a dry wit, and is constantly sarcastic. Though he openly dislikes SpongeBob and Patrick, they view him as a very close friend and cannot be convinced otherwise. However, it is worth noting that sometimes Squidward shows sympathy and even outright compassion towards SpongeBob. It was revealed in "The Graveyard Shift" that even with all the things he had said to SpongeBob, Squidward "always sort of liked him". Also, in the episode "Fools in April," Squidward admits to liking everything about Bikini Bottom and the "uncultured" animals that inhabit this small city. Squidward is an aspiring artist and most of his art is created in tribute to himself. He is also musician, with his instrument of choice being the clarinet. His skills at both seem to vary sporadically throughout the series; while sometime he barely manages to squeak out a few grating notes on his clarinet, he is known for launching himself into complex and intricate solos of virtuoso level; his art is generally of high-quality, but is plagued by his own unaesthetic image. He first appeared in "Help Wanted". Three of Squidward's ancestors are identified: Squog of the Permian period, Squidley of the Middle Ages, and the waiter of the Krusty Cantina in Dead-Eye Gulch. Squidward is voiced by Rodger Bumpass.

Mr. Krabs

Eugene H. Krabs, mostly referred to as Mr. Krabs, is the owner and founder of the Krusty Krab restaurant and is SpongeBob and Squidward's boss. He is very cheap and selfish. He is a red crab, though his daughter Pearl is a sperm whale, that being a running joke throughout the series. Eugene is a nefarious penny-pincher and money hoarder. He often charges outrageous prices for poor-quality goods and foods, and takes advantage of every free product or service. His treatment of his staff is just as miserly; he is often seen violating minimum wage laws, all while working his two-man staff an inhumane number of hours. There have been, however, instances where he acts altruistically, though these are exceedingly rare. In his youth, he served in the Navy, and retains many of the mannerisms and lingual habits of a sailor, notably his pirate accent. He first appeared in the episode "Help Wanted." The plankton known as Sheldon J. Plankton is his former friend turned arch-nemesis. Their relationship's origins were revealed in the episode "Friend or Foe". In the episodes "Sandy's Rocket" and "As Seen on TV," Mr. Krabs has a pet worm named Mr. Doodles. Mr. Krabs is voiced by Clancy Brown. He lives in a giant ship's anchor converted into a luxurious home.

Sandy Cheeks

Sandra "Sandy" Cheeks is a female squirrel from Texas. She is friendly, yet sometimes an aggressive squirrel and SpongeBob's other best friend. She wears a deep sea diving suit while in the ocean, usually only removing it when inside her large underwater home (known as the "Treedome"). This huge plastic dome containing a grassy field and a large oak tree is sponsored by three scientists who also provide her with grants so she can invent mechanical devices. When Sandy is not wearing the diving suit, she is seen wearing a bikini.

While Sandy is a multi-faceted genius possessed of advanced mathematics, athletics, and scientific skill, she is not above playfully sparring with SpongeBob at karate or joining him at fun locales like Goo Lagoon. It is known that Sandy hibernates, but she seems to be able to put the need on hold for holidays (she was seen awake during Christmas).

Sandy first appeared in "Tea at the Treedome". Over the course of the series, Sandy is shown to be something of an adrenaline addict as well as being highly competitive. She is frequently shown practicing karate with SpongeBob and practices several extreme sports, as shown in Pre-Hibernation Week. The same episode exhibited Sandy's unusual physical strength, as she was able to pick up entire buildings in Bikini Bottom with one hand.

Sandy is voiced by Carolyn Lawrence.

Sheldon James Plankton

Sheldon James Plankton (born October, Friday the 13th[citation needed]), known simply as Plankton, is an evil, ego maniacal, green cyclops copepod. The character is voiced by Doug Lawrence.

He is Mr. Krabs' business arch rival and the series' resident villain (although, according to the episode "Friend or Foe," they were once friends). Plankton runs a competing restaurant called the Chum Bucket, located directly across the street from the Krusty Krab. His stated goals in life are to steal the secret Krabby Patty formula from the Krusty Krab, and to rule the world. Plankton is married to a computer "W.I.F.E." (Wired Integrated Female Electroencephalograph) named Karen (voiced by Jill Talley). Plankton and Karen first appear in the episode "Plankton!."

In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Plankton steals the Krabby Patty secret formula, creates bucket helmets, and takes over the bodies of the citizens of Bikini Bottom, almost getting to rule the world. He also steals King Neptune's crown.

Plankton has created many hi-tech gadgets, such as a robot version of Mr. Krabs, a life switcher machine, and a high tech analyzer seen in two episodes. Plankton's first name was revealed to be "Sheldon" in the episode "Plankton's Army". He almost became Mr. Krabs' stepfather in "Enemy in-Law", when he falls in love with Mrs. Krabs, Krabs's mother.

Gary the Snail

Gary is SpongeBob's pet snail. Within the series, snails are analogous to cats, and as such Gary vocalizes like one. He has an interest in poetry. SpongeBob can apparently translate Gary's meows and purrs. A running gag on the show is that SpongeBob must not forget to feed him. Gary has talked a few times in the series, such as the episode "The Secret Box" where Gary says "no" to SpongeBob. In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie he yells: "meow, Plankton." He is voiced by Tom Kenny. Gary is shown to be Patrick's cousin in the episode "Rule of Dumb". Also, despite his limited speech, he is shown to be one of the smartest SpongeBob SquarePants characters.

Supporting characters

  • Flats - Is a green flounder who first appeared on the episode "The Bully". He supposedly wanted to "kick SpongeBob's butt" through out the whole episode. Flats is voiced by Thomas F. Wilson. He also went to community college with Patrick, and is in many other episodes as a background character. He is also seen in "Texas", at the Welcome Home party at the Krusty Krab.
  • Bubble Buddy - He is a man-like character created by SpongeBob. He is made out of bubble. He first appears in "Bubble Buddy" and seems to bother other characters. At the end he talks a few words.
  • Bubble Bass - He is a monstrously obese, picky fish who undermines SpongeBob's confidence in "Pickles". He was then seen in "F.U.N." mistaking Plankton for a jelly bean, nearly eating him. He made a brief cameo in the movie.
  • Cap'n Blue SquarePants - He is SpongeBob's uncle. He is round like most of SpongeBob's family, speaks with a Southern accent, and is a former criminal-chaser. He appeared once in "BlackJack" when SpongeBob sought his help standing up to his cousin BlackJack. Uncle Cap'n Blue misheard at first and thought that SpongeBob wanted to do housework, which SpongeBob did. After, SpongeBob finally got Uncle Cap'n Blue to actually listen to his predicament. Uncle Cap'n Blue tried to convince SpongeBob not to mess with BlackJack because, in his words, "an innocent kid like you"--SpongeBob--"doesn't stand a chance against a criminal mind." Voiced by Garnett Sailor.
  • BlackJack SquarePants - BlackJack is SpongeBob's tough, brawny cousin. He has only appeared in "BlackJack". BlackJack was known for beating up SpongeBob. He ended up being arrested for littering. Some time later, SpongeBob got a letter from him one day, which recalled a flashback from SpongeBob's childhood when BlackJack used to beat him up. In SpongeBob's memory, BlackJack was much taller and bigger than him, but when SpongeBob goes to BlackJack's house to confront him and save his parents, BlackJack is about Plankton's size. It is revealed in the same scene that BlackJack has renounced his criminal ways after being released from prison and he will never again litter. BlackJack is voiced by John DiMaggio.
  • Grandma SquarePants - Grandma SquarePants is SpongeBob's grandmother. She was seen in Grandma's Kisses, where she loves to kiss SpongeBob and treat him like baby. She was seen in "BlackJack", when SpongeBob goes to her home. She is also understanding, since when SpongeBob said that he doesn't want kisses anymore, she didn't mind. She is voiced by Marion Ross.
  • Grandpa SquarePants - Grandpa SquarePants is SpongeBob's grandfather. Although he is never shown as a living character, he has made brief appearances in "The Sponge Who Could Fly" and "Rock Bottom" in SpongeBob's memory. He looks like an older version of SpongeBob, and gives his grandson good advice.
  • Stanley S. SquarePants - Stanley is SpongeBob's cousin who is taller than him, has a rectangular head, similar facial features to SpongeBob, and a long body and limbs. He appeared in "Stanley S. SquarePants". Stanley was sent to SpongeBob's house by his uncle Sherm who left a note for SpongeBob, saying that Stanley breaks everything he touches. Stanley then proves this, by cleaning out SpongeBob's refrigerator and breaking his television. Stanley is very sad because he breaks everything he touches, and SpongeBob tries to cheer him up by asking help from Squidward, Sandy, and Patrick. He messes up every time (except for Squidward who called a moving van): He ripped a hole in Sandy's suit with his teeth which caused Sandy to float to the surface, and he messed up after Patrick tried to teach him to do nothing (clear his thoughts until he was doing absolutely nothing). SpongeBob then gets Stanley a job at the Krusty Krab, where SpongeBob has to cover for him in front of Mr. Krabs when Stanley burns the money in the register and breaks SpongeBob's spatula, among other things. Mr. Krabs then takes advantage of Stanley's clumsiness by convincing Plankton to give him a job, so that Stanley can wreck the Chum Bucket. Stanley is voiced by Christopher Guest.
  • Sherm SquarePants - Sherm SquarePants is the brother of father SquarePants, and he is the uncle of SpongeBob. He is a famous relative of SpongeBob for he can put an entire watermelon inside his nostril. He was mentioned in the episodes: Krab Borg, Stanley S. SquarePants and Pest of the West. He also has a picture of him in The Pest of the West. Sherm is shaped as a kitchen sponge like SpongeBob, although he has many minor differences. he has a watermelon stuck up his nose, brown eyes, a red bow-tie and lots of teeth. One of Sherm's nostrils is much larger than the other and he looks slightly wrinklier and older than SpongeBob. His Square-Pants are a bit crumpled, and there is a metal belt holder in the middle of him. He is only seen in a photo, not seen physically.
  • SpongeBuck SquarePants - SpongeBuck is an old Western hero that lived in Dead Eye Gulch. He is a relative of SpongeBob. Sometimes he hangs out at the Krusty Kantina. SpongeBuck only appears in the episode Pest of the West.

He was voiced by Doug Lawrence in "Sailor Mouth" and Tom Kenny in "My Pretty Seahorse". Old Man Jenkins doesn't like the modern technology as seen in "The Sponge Who Could Fly". When SpongeBob attempts to make a flying machine, Old Man Jenkins is seen several times saying "I told you nothing good would come from city folk and their flying machines!". He has a different appearance in nearly every episode, though sometimes he has the same appearance.

He also has a very impressive unibrow which he is proud of, and refers to it as "big and valuable". He first appeared in the episode "Band Geeks", and then returns in the episodes "Squilliam Returns" and "House Fancy". Voiced by Dee Bradley Baker. It is unknown what he actually does for a living aside from owning a band, but he is very rich and claims to own private jets, a private island, a private helipad, and a balloon/casino, among other things.
