Bond 22 is the working title of a future EON Productions' James Bond film, the sequel to the 2006 film Casino Royale, which rebooted the Bond franchise. Daniel Craig will reprise the role of James Bond, and Marc Forster will direct. Screenwriters Paul Haggis, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade returned for the film. Bond 22 was originally scheduled for a May 2 2008 release, but was pushed back to November 7 2008 to allow more time to complete the film.

Premise

Paul Haggis stated that the film will pick up two minutes after Casino Royale, when a wounded Mr. White is confronted by Bond.[1] Daniel Craig noted that the filmmakers have "set up the idea now that there's an organisation out there that needs to be sorted out, and [that Bond has] got a sense of revenge." He stated that Bond would be "still too headstrong and [wouldn't] always make the right decisions."[2] Haggis further revealed that James Bond will be "a very human and flawed assassin, a man who has to navigate a morally complex and often cynical world while attempting to hold onto his deep beliefs of what is right and wrong."[3] Eva Green also added that the audience will "understand what's going on in [Vesper Lynd's] mind." The Algerian boyfriend will be one of the antagonists in the film.[2]

Cast

Eva Green may return as Vesper Lynd, possibly in a pre-recorded video message.[4] Haggis stated that he would like Jeffrey Wright to return as Felix Leiter.[7] The characters Miss Moneypenny and "Q" will not be part of the story.[3] According to casting notices sent out by the producers Broccoli and Wilson, one of the Bond girls will be played by a Latina actress in her late 20s, preferably from South America.[8]

Production

In July 2006, as Daniel Craig's debut as James Bond, Casino Royale, entered post-production, EON Productions announced Bond 22 would be based on an original idea by producer Michael G. Wilson. Roger Michell was being negotiated with to direct.[9] The film was confirmed for a May 2 2008 release date, with Craig reprising the lead role.[10] Michell, who previously worked with Daniel Craig on Enduring Love and The Mother, decided not to direct the film, stating, "I was very nervous that there was a start date but really no script at all. And I like to be very well prepared as a director."[11] Sony Entertainment vice-chairman Jeff Blake admitted that a production schedule of eighteen months was a very short window. The release date was eventually pushed back to November 7 2008.[12]

Neal Purvis and Robert Wade completed their draft of the script by April 2007.[13] Wade said that the emphasis would be on the unfinished emotional business at the end of Casino Royale: "It has to be dealt with in such a way that his character continues to have an arc. It can't just be he's tough and he's tempered steel and totally impervious. There are things he still has to resolve."[14] The following month, Paul Haggis, who had polished the Casino Royale script, began his re-write.[15] Haggis turned down directing the film, as he "felt that it takes a big commitment to direct a Bond film... It's a two year commitment basically to do it. If you do that on top of writing, it's almost a three year commitment."[16] In writing the script, Haggis drew inspiration from Bond creator Ian Fleming, and author John le Carre.[7] In June 2007, Marc Forster was confirmed as the director of Bond 22. Forster, a Bond fan, said that the "new direction that the Bond character has taken [in Casino Royale] offers a director a host of new possibilities."[17] Forster left Haggis to work on the script alone.[7]

Production designer Peter Lamont, who has been a crew member on eighteen Bond films, will not be continuing with Bond 22. Despite commenting on the state of the production earlier in the year, leading many to believe he was continuing his role, Lamont has stated that Dennis Gassner will take over the production designer role.[18] In addition, London-based tailors Dunhill will be providing Bond's suits. The Italian Brioni had provided the costumes for the film series since GoldenEye (1995). Dunhill had tailored suits for Daniel Craig to wear at various publicity events.[19]

Filming

The town council of Siena gave permission for the crew to shoot at the Palio di Siena horse race on August 16 2007. Fourteen cameras were placed around the arena, though helicopters were banned, and the crew were forbidden from showing any violence "involving either people or animals". The shots of the race will be edited into the action sequence, which will be filmed during the main shoot in 2008.[20] Afterward, scouting took place in Craco, the Montecotugno di Senise dam and the road around San Biagio and Maratea, which may stand in for North Africa.[21] From August 23–29, the second-unit shot at Madrid,[22] and will be in Panama during early November.[23]

Principal photography will begin on December 10 2007[24] and be based at Bond's spiritual home of Pinewood Studios in the UK, including the newly rebuilt 007 Stage.[25] The shoot will last six months,[26] with other locations in Italy and South America.[24] Forster expressed interest in the Swiss Alps as a location[27] and also scouted Bregenz in Austria in late June 2007 to test shoot a production of Tosca on the lake's floating opera stage.[28]

Vehicles and gadgets

Ford has a three-film deal that began with 2002's Die Another Day. The Aston Martin DBS V12 will return in the film, and will be supplied with some gadgets.[29]

Video game adaptation

In May 2006 Activision acquired non-exclusive rights to develop and publish James Bond games; an exclusive deal with Activision takes effect in September 2007. During an earnings report, Bobby Kotick, the CEO of Activision, announced that their first Bond game would be released in May 2008.[30] Previously it was reported by Variety that Activision's first game is expected to be a tie-in to Bond 22.[31]

Bond 23

Bond 23 has been tentatively scheduled for a worldwide release by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Columbia Pictures in 2010.[32] This film is scheduled to be actor Daniel Craig's third outing as James Bond. Craig is expected to be paid £13 million to star in the next two films, earning £5m for Bond 22 and £8m for Bond 23.[33]
