(2937) Gibbs ( 1980 LA ) is an asteroid about three miles in size of the main inner belt that was discovered on June 14, 1980 by the American astronomer Edward LG Bowell at the Lowell Observatory , Anderson Mesa Station ( Anderson Mesa ) near Flagstaff , Arizona ( IAU code 688).

designation

(2937) Gibbs was named after the American physicist Josiah Willard Gibbs (1839-1903). He worked at Yale University and Princeton University . Although his main work dealt with thermodynamics , theories of optics and vector analysis , he made an important contribution to the study of minor planets through his research on orbits .
