(3990) Heimdal is an asteroid of the main outer belt , which was discovered on September 25, 1987 by the Danish astronomer Poul Jensen at the Schmidt telescope of the Brorfelde observatory ( IAU code 054) near Holbæk . There had already been several unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj : on August 18, 1971 with the provisional designation 1971 QJ 3 and on October 8, 1972 (1972 TG 2 ), December 2, 1972 (1972 XM) and September 23, 1979 (1979 SA 3 ).
The asteroid is in a 3: 2 orbital resonance with the planet Jupiter , which means that if the sun orbits Jupiter two times, the asteroid orbits the sun three times.
In 2011, a light curve of the asteroid was recorded with the CCD sensors of the 70 cm reflector telescope at the Chuguevskaya Station belonging to the National W. N. Karasin University of Kharkiv . The measurements suggest that the rotation period could be 20 hours. It was assumed that (3990) Heimdal belonged to the Hilda group , a group of asteroids whose namesake is the asteroid (153) Hilda .
(3990) Heimdal was named on September 1, 1993 after Heimdall , a god from Norse mythology . The Mars crater Heimdal, however, was named in 2008 after the Norwegian town Heimdal . A surface formation in the solar system named after the Nordic god is Heimdall crater on Jupiter's moon Callisto .
