location
The village lies in the open, on a plateau just under two kilometers southwest of Pappenheim.
history
The history of Übermatzhofen goes back a long way, possibly even to pre-Roman times. Presumably in the 12th century, the "nobles of Übermatzhofen" built a chapel for knights on the site of a Germanic sanctuary there . A druid stone is still preserved from the sanctuary .
The small village church of St. George was built in the 15th century on the foundation of the knight's chapel, and it was first mentioned in a document in 1560. Originally it was supplied by the nearby parish of Solnhofen , today it is a branch of the Evangelical Lutheran town church St. Marien in Pappenheim.
In the geographical, statistical-topographical lexicon of Franconia from 1802, the place is described as follows: “Uebermannshofen, Filialkirchdorf in the Fraisch district of the Solnhofen administration office with 10 subjects belonging to it; 11 are alien. "
With the community edict at the beginning of the 19th century, Übermatzhofen became a politically independent community. On April 1, 1971 it was incorporated into Pappenheim as part of the regional reform in Bavaria .
