history

Order of St. John

The first documentary mention of the place took place in 1197, when the Übersbacher church was consecrated by the Salzburg archbishop Adalbert . Herrand of Wildon then handed over his own church together with the patronage and Zehentrecht the Order of St. John (now the Military Order of Malta ). The name Übersbach most likely comes from the "Üblen Bache", today's Hartlerbach, which caused severe floods almost every year. In the 13th century, parish rights were transferred to Altenmarkt, and from then on Übersbach was a branch church of Altenmarkt. Übersbach has been part of the Söchau parish since 1790.

The population has often had to pass tough tests throughout history. The plague and recurring armed conflicts inflicted severe damage on the town and its residents, most recently in 1945 when the Second World War ended behind the local area of Übersbach and claimed 70 lives. In the course of the fighting, 64 houses burned down, 17 of them completely.

Around 1600 Welsdorf Castle was built by Jonas von Wilfersdorf . The rule of Welsdorf was established in 1603 and lasted until the peasant liberation in 1848. The church building is the property of the municipality of Fürstenfeld.
