İsmail Taviş (born April 15, 1964 in Ankara ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. He played three seasons for Beşiktaş Istanbul . Due to his robust stature and physical and combative style of play, he was nicknamed Komando İsmail during this time . He was less known by his other nickname. Since there was another İsmail in the team with İsmail Gül during his time at Boluspor and he was older, Taviş was henceforth referred to as the Küçük İsmail (German: The Little İsmail) and Gül as the Büyük İsmail (German: The Big İsmail). After his Beşiktaş time he played at Aydınspor and was instrumental in the great success of this club. He is the player with the most top division appearances and the club's second best top division scorer .

Player career

The beginnings of Taviş 'football career are not documented. It is only documented that he played in the first division and promoted Boluspor in the 1986/87 season . Here he was noticed in the first few weeks due to his good performance and became a Turkish national player in October 1986. At the end of the season he became one of the most sought-after players of the 1987 summer transfer period. Beşiktaş Istanbul reached an agreement with Taviş and his club Boluspor before this transfer period began . So Taviş signed on June 16, 1987 with Beşiktaş and moved to Istanbul for a transfer fee of 50 million Turkish Lira . Beşiktaş signed him to reinforce the defense. The English head coach Gordon Milne put him in a total of 22 league games in the first season. For the 1988/98 season Beşiktaş reinforced his defense by the obligations of the defenders Recep Çetin and Şenol Fidan . This fact ensured that Taviş hardly played a role in Milne's squad planning and ended the season with only one league and two cup appearances. His club won the Turkish Football Cup , the TSYD Istanbul Cup and the Turkish Supercup this season. The league ended Taviş 'side behind arch-rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul , ten points behind as runners-up. Taviş 'position within the team did not change in his third season, the 1989/90 season . He closed the season with three league and two cup games. With his club, Taviş managed to defend the title in the Turkish Cup, the first title defense in this competition, the title defense in the TSYD Istanbul Cup and the win of the Turkish championship .

In the summer of 1990, Taviş, who had only been a reservist for the last two seasons and hardly ever played, was put on the list of players who should be surrendered by head coach Milne. So Taviş moved to the 1990/91 season for league rivals and promoted Aydınspor . At this club he immediately established himself as a regular player and top performer. Already in the first game of the first division season 1990/91 Taviş was part of one of the most memorable games in the Turkish club's history. In the game of the 1st matchday, which was played on August 26, 1990, Taviş 'team succeeded against Fenerbahçe coached by Guus Hiddink a 6-1 victory. This victory made Taviş 'team the surprise team of the season and gave Fenerbahçe the highest first division defeat in the club's history. Taviş finished the season 28 league appearances and scored three goals. In the next season Taviş achieved a greater success with his team, so the season ended in 5th place in the table. As a result, Aydınspor became the surprise team of the season and achieved the best first division placement in the club's history. Taviş finished the season with 30 league games and was with his six league goals scored behind his teammate Nordin Neggazi the second most successful goalscorer of his team. In the next season he missed relegation with his club and thus rose to the 2nd Futbol Ligi .

Taviş played one season for Aydınspor in the 2nd Turkish league and moved to league rivals Göztepe Izmir in the summer of 1994 . Here, too, he rose to the top immediately and played for the second division championship with his team throughout the season. After his club ended the season as runner-up and thus missed promotion, Taviş left this club and instead moved within the league to Marmarisspor . After two seasons for this club, he played in succession for Balıkesirspor and MKE Kırıkkalespor and then ended his career.

National team

Taviş began his international career in 1986 with a use of the Turkish national team . He was appointed to the squad for the first time by the then national coach Coşkun Özarı as part of a qualifying match for the European Championship in 1988 against the Yugoslav national team and made his international debut in this encounter. three weeks later he completed his second and last senior international match against the Northern Irish national team .

In 1986 and 1987 Taviş played four times for Turkey's Olympic selection.

Coaching career

One year after the end of his career as a soccer player, Taviş began working as a youth coach at Beşiktaş Istanbul and looked after different age groups for the next two years.

For the 2002/03 season he took over the fourth division Yalovaspor as head coach and worked for the first time in this role. At the end of the season he led this club to the championship of the TFF 3rd Lig and thus to promotion to the TFF 2nd Lig . Despite this success, he left this club and took over the league rivals Ispartaspor for the next season . He resigned this club shortly before the end of the season. The following seasons he looked after various third and fourth division teams.

In October 2006 he was introduced to the third division Boluspor as the new head coach, at the club where Taviş was able to assert himself as a football player. Just four weeks later, however, he left this club again.

Later he worked as an assistant coach at the clubs Kahramanmaraşspor and Gaziantepspor .
