The castle on an old photograph

Świbie (German Schwieben ) is an Upper Silesian village in the municipality of Wielowieś , Silesian Voivodeship in Poland . It has 1300 inhabitants and is located on the western edge of the Upper Silesian industrial area near the border with the Opole Voivodeship . Świbie is a typical north-south street village . The village consists of two parts, the lower village and the upper village. Świbie has an independent schoolteacher office and forms a parish with Dąbrówka .

geography

Świbie is located on the Upper Silesian Muschelkalk ridge about eight kilometers from the Wielowieś municipal seat (Langendorf) and about 33 km from the Gliwice district seat. Neighboring towns are Radonia (Radun), Wiśnicze (Wischnitz) and Dąbrówka (Dombrowka). The hamlets Diana (Dianenberg) and Napłatki (Naplatken) belong to Świbie .

To the north of the village lies the Himmelwitzer Forest with the “Hubert” reserve.

history

Schwieben was first mentioned in 1299. Schwieben and the road on which the place is located were probably laid out by Cistercians from Himmelwitz . Schwieben was created under German law.

Schwieben became Protestant in 1619 and Catholic again in 1665. When the Toster estates were divided up in 1666, Schwieben and Wischnitz came to Georg Leonhard Graf Collona. In 1669 the chapel in Oberdorf was built. 120 residents were killed in the Second World War and its aftermath. In 1945 Schwieben was occupied by the Red Army and the previously German town later came under Polish administration. Another 140 residents left Schwieben or had to leave the place. The official name Schwieben was changed to Świbie.

In 1964 the new elementary school was built in Świbie.

From 1950 to 1998, Świbie was in the Katowice Voivodeship . In 1999 Schwieben came to the Silesian Voivodeship and the re-established Powiat Gliwicki .

The book “Wilder Wermut” is about the place Schwieben and the Schwiebener. The Chronicle of a Russian Intern in 1945 ”by Josef Ploch. From 1961 to 1992, Świbie was an excavation site for finds from the Lusatian culture . In 2006 and 2007, Świbie was the location for the documentary "Liberator - the last flight" (Polish: "Ostatni lot bestii") by dokuframe, which is about the shooting down of a Consolidated B-24 on July 7, 1944.

Etymology of the place name

The place name Schwieben and its current Polish form Świbie are probably derived from the (probably Slavic) name of a plant. An old German spelling of the place was Schwiben and an old Polish name was Świbia. The Latin name of the place is Schwiebensis.
