Politics and world events
Roman Empire
- The revolt against Roman supremacy, which began in Pannonia last year, spreads to the provinces of Dalmatia and Illyria .
- Publius Quinctilius Varus becomes a legate of the Germania magna military district . He is charged with submitting the area between the Rhine and Elbe to the Roman Empire. He conducts a census, collects tribute payments and recruits soldiers, which increases popular discontent.
- The Cheruscan Arminius returns to Germania after having previously led a Cheruscan auxiliary army under Roman command. The Romans under P. Quinctilius Varus try here to expand their territory to the Weser and Elbe . Arminius then begins to ally with various other Germanic tribes to prevent the Romans from advancing.
- Emperor Augustus has the last of his living grandchildren, Agrippa Postumus , banished to Elba . The reasons for this are never clarified.
- Establishment of a “Praefectus Annonae” for the grain supply.
Asia
- Zhai Yi, governor of Dong, proclaims Yang Xiang as emperor of China . He thus entered into open rebellion against the childish Crown Prince Ruzi Ying and his regent Wang Mang .
- Winter: Wang Mang succeeds in putting down the rebellion led by Zhai Yi. The former governor is caught and executed.
- Abgar V is deposed as king of Osrhoene , a small kingdom in the Middle East.
