(13229) Echion is an asteroid belonging to the group of Jupiter Trojans . This describes asteroids that orbit the sun on the Lagrange points on the orbit of the planet Jupiter . It is assigned to the Lagrange point L 4 , that is (13229) Echion is ahead of Jupiter by 60 ° in its orbit around the sun.
The asteroid was discovered on November 2, 1997 by the Czech astronomer couple Jana Tichá and Miloš Tichý at the Kleť Observatory ( IAU code 046) near Český Krumlov . Unconfirmed sightings of (13229) Echion had already occurred in March 1978 (1978 EG 9 ) at the Palomar Observatory in California .
(13229) Echion was named after Echion . Echion was one of the Greeks who hid in the Trojan Horse during the Trojan War . He was killed when he jumped out. It was named on May 23, 2000. Trojans running ahead are named after Greek heroes. The Echion Linea, on the other hand, a more than 1000 km long furrow ( Linea ) on Jupiter's moon Europa , was named in 1985 after the Echion division .
