(231265) Saulperlmutter is an asteroid located in the central main belt . It was discovered by the Italian amateur astronomer Vincenzo Silvano Casulli on January 5, 2006 at the observatory in the district of Vallemare ( IAU code A55) in the municipality of Borbona in the province of Rieti .

Mean distance from the Sun ( major semiaxis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbital plane of (231265) Saulperlmutter roughly correspond to the Dora family, a group of asteroids named after (668) Dora . However, the asteroid does not belong to any asteroid family.

(231265) Saulperlmutter was named on April 22, 2016 after the American astrophysicist Saul Perlmutter (* 1959) who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011 together with Brian P. Schmidt and Adam Riess “for discovering the accelerated expansion of the universe through Observations of distant supernovae ”. After Brian P. Schmidt and Adam Riess, the asteroids (233292) Brianschmidt and (236305) Adamriess , also discovered by Vinzeno Silvano Casulli, were named on the same day .
