(233292) Brianschmidt is an asteroid located in the central main belt . It was discovered by the Italian amateur astronomer Vincenzo Silvano Casulli on January 19, 2006 at the observatory in the Vallemare district ( IAU code A55) in the municipality of Borbona in the province of Rieti . The asteroid had already been sighted on February 7th and 8th, 2002 under the provisional designation 2002 CF 38 at the Lincoln Laboratory Experimental Test Site in New Mexico .
The asteroid was named on April 22, 2016 after the American - Australian astronomer Brian P. Schmidt (* 1967), who together with Saul Perlmutter and Adam Riess received the Nobel Prize in Physics “for discovering the accelerated expansion of the universe through Observations of distant supernovae ”. The asteroids (231265) Saulperlmutter and (236305) Adamriess , also discovered by Vinzeno Silvano Casulli, were named after Saul Perlmutter and Adam Riess on the same day . The lunar crater Schmidt and the Martian crater Schmidt, however, were named after other scientists.
