(470316) 2007 OC 10 is a large trans-Neptunian object that is classified as a near or extended scattered disk object (SDO or DO) in terms of orbital dynamics . Because of its size, the asteroid is a dwarf planet candidate .

discovery

2007 OC 10 was discovered on July 22, 2007 by Meg Schwamb and Mike Brown of the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) with the 1.2 m Oschin Schmidt telescope at the Palomar Observatory ( California ). The discovery was announced on September 6, 2007, it was confirmed in 2008 by the 1.5 m Cassegrain telescope also at the Palomar observatory; the planetoid was later given the minor planet number 470316 by the IAU .

The observation arc of the asteroid begins with the official observation on July 22, 2007. Since then, the asteroid has been observed through various telescopes such as the Herschel space telescope and earth-based telescopes. In April 2017, a total of 159 observations were made over a period of 8 years. The last observation so far was carried out in July 2015 at the Pan-STARRS telescope (PS1) ( Maui ). Orbit

2007 OC 10 orbits the sun in 353.39 years in an elliptical orbit between 35.46  AU and 64.51 AU from its center. The orbit eccentricity is 0.291, the orbit is inclined 21.65 ° to the ecliptic . The planetoid is currently 36.07 AU from the Sun. The last time he passed through perihelion was in 2007, so the next perihelion should take place in 2360.

Marc Buie ( DES ) classifies the planetoid as SDO , while the Minor Planet Center does not have a specific classification; the latter classifies it as a non-SDO and generally as a “distant object” . The team of the “TNOs are cool” program, however, classifies it as an extended SDO (ESDO or DO ). The Johnston's Archive lists it as "other TNO" , which means it is definitely not a Cubewano or Resonantes KBO .

size

A diameter of 309 km is currently assumed, based on a reflectivity of 12.7% and an absolute brightness of 5.43  m , which was determined by the Herschel space telescope. Based on this diameter, the total surface area is almost exactly 300,000 km 2 . The apparent magnitude of 2007 OC 10 is 20.96  m .

Since it is conceivable that 2007 OC 10 is in hydrostatic equilibrium due to its size and could thus be largely round, it may meet the criteria for classification as a dwarf planet . Mike Brown expects that it is at 2007 OC 10 to perhaps is a dwarf planet.
