(6456) Golombek is an asteroid that was discovered by the American astronomers Eleanor Helin and Kenneth Lawrence on July 27, 1992 at the Palomar Observatory ( IAU code 675) in California .

(6456) Golombek is an asteroid of the Cupid type . There he belongs to the subgroup Amor III, which means that he belongs to a group of asteroids that come quite close to the earth's orbit , but do not cross it, while their semi- major axis (that is the mean distance to the sun ) in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter lies.

According to the SMASS classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ), a spectroscopic study by Gianluca Masi , Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel at (6456) Golombek assumed a dark surface, so it could, roughly speaking, be trade a C asteroid . An infrared spectroscopic study of the asteroid from the year 2006 saw the line spectrum on Olivinbanden with ortho and clinopyroxenes out. However, the previous spectroscopic investigations are not yet sufficient to classify the asteroid body in a taxonomic class.

The asteroid was named on December 14, 1997 after geologist Matthew P. Golombek, who worked in the Earth and Space Sciences Division of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the Mars Pathfinder probe project office .
