(6481) Tenzing is an asteroid of the main inner belt , which was discovered on September 9, 1988 by the Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos at the Kle Observ observatory ( IAU code 046) near Český Krumlov . There had already been several unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid: on August 17, 1950 (with the provisional designation 1950 QK) at the Goethe Link Observatory in Indiana , in October 1978 (1978 UC 3 ) at the Palomar Observatory in California , on August 28 , 1950 September 1981 (1981 SV 5 ) at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj and on February 20, 1987 (1987 DA) at the observatory in the Japanese city of Toyota .

Mean solar distance ( major semi-axis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of the asteroid are similar to the orbital data of the members of the Flora family, a large group of asteroids named after (8) Flora . Asteroids of this family move in a 4: 9 orbital resonance with the planet Mars around the sun . The group is also called the Ariadne family, after the asteroid (43) Ariadne .

The asteroid is named after the Nepalese mountaineer Tenzing Norgay (1914-1986), who was the first to climb Mount Everest in 1953 together with Edmund Hillary , after whom the asteroid (3130) Hillary is named . (6481) Tenzing was named at the suggestion of the Czech astronomer Miloš Tichý by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) on November 23, 1999.
