Asia
- The city of Basra is founded by Caliph Umar as a trading base and an Arab military camp.
- Beginning of the decisive phase of the Arab expansion / conquest of the Levant :
- August 20: Battle of Jarmuk : The Byzantines are defeated by the attacking Arabs under their general Chālid ibn al-Walīd and lose Syria and Palestine . Only a few bases, including Jerusalem , can hold out for a short time before they too are conquered.
- November: The siege of Jerusalem begins.
- Battle of Kadesia (according to more recent considerations only in 638): The Sassanids under general Rostam Farrochzād are subject to the Arabs under their general Saad ibn Abi Waqqas and must evacuate Mesopotamia . Rostam falls in battle. Also Ctesiphon falls shortly afterwards in Arab hands.

- Chintila becomes king of the Visigoths as successor to Sisenand .
- Rothari becomes King of the Lombards, succeeding Arioald .
