- October 12 : Battle of Hatfield Chase : King Penda of Mercia and Cadwallon ap Cadfan of Gwynedd defeat Edwin of Northumbria , who is killed in the battle. Northumbria is again divided into Deira and Bernicia , Osric becomes King of Deira, Aethelfrith's son Eanfrith King of Bernicia, both are pagans. Bishop Paulinus of York flees the country to Kent , where he becomes Bishop of Rochester .

- Dagobert I. sets his three-year-old son Sigibert III. as king of the Austrasian part of the empire.
