Islamic expansion
- February: Islamic expansion : Caliph Umar ibn al-Chattab moves into the conquered Jerusalem . With this the Holy Sepulcher falls into the hands of the Arabs . Most of the Syrian and Palestinian bases of Byzantium will fall to the Arabs this year , only Caesarea Maritima will be able to hold out for two more years thanks to the fleet.

- April: start of the Dai calendar
- As a result of the Arab conquest of Jerusalem, the patriarchal seat there remained vacant until around 650 .
- Introduction of the Islamic calendar by Caliph Umar ibn al-Chattab: the beginning of the calendar is placed on the Hijra of the Prophet Mohammed 622 .
- October 15 : After the death of Pope Honorius I , the Roman clergy elects Severinus as his successor. He refuses to recognize the monotheletic religious formula Ecthesis, which Emperor Herakleios had proposed, whereupon the latter initially refused to confirm his choice; it will be made up in 640 , so that this year is the official beginning of the pontificate of Severinus.
- Pyrrhus becomes Patriarch of Constantinople as the successor to Sergios I.
