geography
Adairsville is located about 20 km northwest of Cartersville and about 100 km northwest of Atlanta .
history
Adairsville originated before the Cherokee were driven out of the area from the settlement of the Scottish immigrant John Adair, who married a Cherokee. The construction of the Western and Atlantic Railroad from Atlanta to Chattanooga should be decisive for the development of the place . In 1847 a railroad depot was built on William Watts' land. Watt's house is still preserved today and is located on a hill above the village. After the establishment of the depot, the place began to grow significantly and forges, windmills and hotels were established. As a result of the upswing, the place was recognized as a municipality in 1854 and known as the "Granary of the State". During the Civil War , the town was one of the scenes of the Andrews raid ("Great Locomotive Chase") in April 1862 and on May 17, 1864 there was a skirmish between associations of the Northern States under William T. Sherman and the Confederate in the area of Adairsville Troops held under Joseph E. Johnston . In memory of the events of 1862, the three-day “Great Locomotive Chase Festival” is held annually in Adairsville on the first weekend of October.
