Adolf Gustav Cillien (born April 23, 1893 in Volksberg , Alsace , † April 29, 1960 in Hanover ) was a German theologian and politician ( CDU ).

Life and work

Cillien attended the humanistic grammar school in Diedenhofen / Lothringen . After graduating from high school in 1912, he studied Protestant theology in Strasbourg and Göttingen . From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War as a soldier . After completing his studies, he was first vicar in Duderhausen and later pastor in Papenburg. In 1926 he became pastor of the Evangelical Church in Hanover . From 1933 to 1940 he was superintendent in Burgdorf . From 1934 Cillien was one of the episcopal vicars appointed by regional bishop August Marahrens during the church struggle . From 1935 he was part-time head of the People's Missionary Office II and then from 1937 to 1953 (part-time until 1940) head of the Office for Community Service (AfG). In 1943 Cillien was named an extraordinary member of the Hanover Regional Church Office (ao Oberkirchenrat) and remained that member until 1953. From 1946 to 1951, Adolf Cillien was the editor of the message (from 1975: Evangelical newspaper for the churches in Lower Saxony ) at Lutherhausverlag .

Political party

Cillien began his political work as early as 1945. Together with Arnold Fratzscher , Cillien was one of the Protestants in the province of Hanover who spoke out in favor of a non-denominational Christian party and was consequently one of the founding members of the CDU there. From 1949 until his death he was chairman of the umbrella organization of the Lower Saxony CDU and since 1950 also a member of the federal executive committee.

Cillien was a member of the selection committee of the two Union parties that proposed Ludwig Erhard as the new Federal President on February 24, 1959 , which he refused.

Cillien was on August 23, 1946 to October 29, 1946 a member of the appointed Hanover State Parliament . Here he was chairman of the CDU parliamentary group and chairman of the committee for popular education, art and science. Between 9 December 1946 and 23 March 1947, he was a member of the appointed Lower Saxony state parliament and was followed from 20 April 1947 to 30 April 1951 Member of the Lower Saxony regional parliament in the first term. Here he became the chairman of the CDU parliamentary group and later the parliamentary group chairman of the DP / CDU parliamentary group (since March 28, 1951). On May 9, 1947, he was elected chairman of the culture committee.

Cillien was a member of the German Bundestag from 1953 until his death . He was directly elected in 1953 in the constituency of Hildesheim-Stadt and -Land and in 1957 in the constituency of the city of Hannover-Nord . During his membership in parliament he was consistently deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group .
