Adolf Gideon Bartholdi (born October 11, 1688 in Staven ; † February 13, 1768 in Stralsund ) was a pedagogue. He was the rector of the Sundisches Gymnasium in Stralsund.

Life

Adolf Gideon Bartholdi was born as the son of the Staven pastor Christian Bartholdi († 1714). One brother, Samuel Henricus Bartholdi († May 1745), was initially rector of the Friedland School of Academics (Mecklenburg) , and from 1715 successor to his father as a pastor in Staven.

Bartholdi attended the schools in Anklam and Stargard . In 1707 he enrolled at the University of Rostock , where he studied oriental languages under Hermann Christoph Engelken , philosophy under Franz Albert Aepinus , but mainly theology under Johannes Fecht , Zacharias Grapo and Albrecht Joachim von Krakevitz . In 1713 he went via Berlin , Halle (Saale) and Wittenberg to Jena , where he completed his studies under Michael Förtsch (1654–1724), Johann Andreas Danz and Johann Franz Buddeus , and also heard natural law and natural science.

After the death of his father, he returned home in 1714. In 1716 he was appointed rector of the scholarly school in Neubrandenburg and after the death of Stralsund rector Christoph Pyl in 1740 as his successor. With a lot of commitment he tried to impart knowledge to his students with prosaic and poetic speech exercises . After he had gained the highest recognition of the authorities and the love of his students in both practical and literary terms, he asked for his dismissal in 1755 and handed over the rectorate to Christoph Andreas Büttner .

In the following years he wrote a history of the Stralsund grammar school, which covered the first two centuries of its existence, as well as an autobiography, which is provided with marginal notes by his son. After his death in the 80th year, both works came to the council library, a second copy of the "school history" to the library of the grammar school. The latter has been provided with valuable additions by his student, the well-known Pomeranian historical researcher Johann Albert Dinnies and the district administrator Johann Ehrenfried Charisius .
