Adolf Hausrath
Adolf Hausrath (pseudonym George Taylor ; born January 13, 1837 in Karlsruhe , † August 2, 1909 in Heidelberg ) was a Protestant theologian and writer. Besides Felix Dahn and Georg Ebers, Hausrath is the main representative of the so-called " professorial novel ".
Life
His father August Hausrath (1806–1847) was a respected preacher and, together with Carl Zittel and Emil Otto Schellenberg , leader of the liberal party.
Hausrath studied Protestant theology and philosophy in Göttingen , Berlin , Jena and Heidelberg . During his studies in Jena he became a member of the Arminia fraternity in the castle cellar in 1856/57 . His academic teachers included Johann Gustav Droysen , Karl August Hase and Kuno Fischer . In 1861 he received his doctorate in Berlin for Lic. Theol. and became vicar in Heidelberg, where he completed his habilitation in 1862. In 1864 he became assessor in the Evangelical Upper Church Council of the Baden Church in Karlsruhe , in 1867 extraordinary, and in 1872 full professor for New Testament exegesis and church history in Heidelberg. In 1889 he was a member of the First Chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly as a representative of Heidelberg University . Shortly before his death, he was accepted as an extraordinary member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .
In 1864 the householder married Henriette Fallenstein (1840–1895), a sister of Max Weber's mother Helene Weber. They had eleven children, eight of whom reached adulthood, including August (1865–1944) and Hans Hausrath (1866–1945). Until his death, Hausrath lived with his family in the "Villa Fallenstein", Ziegelhäuser Landstrasse 17; Max and Marianne Weber followed him as tenants . He was buried, like his wife, in the Bergfriedhof (Heidelberg)
Work and meaning
Hausrath was a dedicated liberal, both ecclesiastically and politically . Under the influence of his Heidelberg teachers Richard Rothe (about whom he wrote a biography) and Ludwig Häusser , he participated in the founding of the German Protestant Association and became its first secretary. His New Testament and church history works are predominantly of a biographical nature (the broadest distribution was a popular biography of Martin Luther ). Their scientific value is limited; for this, like Hausrath's novels, they are characterized by psychological empathy. Like Heinrich von Treitschke (whose biography he also wrote), he saw Protestantism as the dominant culture of the empire; on the other hand, he fought Catholicism and social democracy. Hausrath's writings are not free from anti-Semitic traits.
