Adolf Hoffmann (building researcher)

Adolf Hoffmann (born April 20, 1941 in Danzig ) is a German building researcher .

Adolf Hoffmann studied architecture at the Technical University of Berlin and at the University of Karlsruhe from 1962 to 1970, and passed the main diploma examination with Egon Eiermann . After passing the second state examination in Stuttgart in 1975, he was appointed government master builder ( assessor in the public building administration). That same year he was at the University of Karlsruhe with Wulf Schirmer with that of Friedrich Rakob supervised dissertation The "stadium" in the Villa Hadriana at Tivoli doctorate .

From 1975 to 1981 he was Wulf Schirmer's research assistant at the Institute for Building History in Karlsruhe, and during this time he continued the research work of Arnold Tschira and Friedrich Rakob in the Casa del Fauno in Pompeii . From 1981 to 1986 he was a consultant for architecture at the Istanbul Department of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) and involved in the institute's research projects in Pergamon and Aizanoi / Çavdarhisar. From 1985 to 1990 he was in charge of the excavation in Aizanoi.

In 1985 he completed his habilitation at the University of Karlsruhe with the subject The Casa del Fauno in Pompeii and became a private lecturer . From 1987 he was a research assistant at the DAI and initially headed the excavations in Gadara (Umm Qais) , Jordan . In 1988 he became head of the architecture department at the headquarters of the DAI and in 1989 scientific director at the headquarters of the DAI in Berlin.

In 1992 Hoffmann was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Karlsruhe and in 1993 he was appointed to the chair for building history at the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the Brandenburg Technical University (BTU) in Cottbus . In 1994 he was appointed university professor (C 4) in Cottbus (until 2001, from then on honorary professor ). From 1998 to 2002 he was head of the research project on the " Domus Severiana " on the Palatine Hill in Rome .

In 2001 he was appointed First Director of the Istanbul Department of the DAI. In the same year he was awarded the Max Planck Research Prize for International Cooperation . In the following years until his retirement in 2006, he led research projects on Rizq Mosque in Hasankeyf , the Red Hall / Kızıl Avlu Pergamon, the Hellenistic castle on the karasis in Kozan (province of Adana ) and Şeker Hane Köşkü in Selinus / Gazipaşa at Alanya , the presumed cenotaph for Emperor Traian .

Hoffmann is a full member of the DAI and an honorary member of the Koldewey Society , of which he was first chairman from 1994 to 2000.
