Heinrich Ernst Adolf Westphal , from 1831 Westphal von Bergener (born December 12, 1785 in Smentowken , † October 23, 1864 in Ohlau ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Adolf was the son of the bailiff Heinrich Bernhard Westphal and his wife Anna Helene, née Peters.

Military career

Westphal came on 14 October 1799 Junker in the hussar regiment "Usedom" the Prussian army and was promoted to mid-April 1806 second lieutenant . As such, he took part in the fighting near Halle (Saale) , Lychen and Waren in the Fourth Coalition War.

After the Peace of Tilsit , Westphal was aggregated to the 2nd Leib-Hussar Regiment on April 29, 1809 and assigned to April 10, 1811. On March 1, 1812 he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant and in the same year took part in the mobile 1st combined hussar regiment during the campaign against Russia in the battles near Bausk and Friedrichstadt. Westphal was wounded and awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor when he saw the pictograms . King Friedrich Wilhelm III. awarded him on March 12, 1813 the order Pour le Mérite . On April 20, 1813, when he was promoted to staff officer , he became the leader of the volunteer hunter squadron of the 2nd Leib-Hussar Regiment. During the Wars of Liberation Westphal fought in the battles near Bautzen and Leipzig and was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class for his behavior at Großgörschen and the Cross 1st class for Reichenbach. On March 31, 1814 he was appointed captain and squadron chief.

On November 29, 1821, he was promoted to major and appointed commander of the 2nd Battalion in the 22nd Landwehr Regiment. This was followed by a position as commander of the 1st Battalion in the 21st Landwehr Regiment from September 26, 1828 to March 29, 1834. Then Westphal was initially commissioned to lead the 4th Hussar Regiment and on March 30, 1835 he was appointed regimental commander. In this position Westphal received the Order of Saint Anne II on September 30, 1835 and rose to colonel by the end of March 1838 . On March 22, 1843 he was transferred to Neisse as commander of the 12th Cavalry Brigade and in this capacity was promoted to major general on March 30, 1844. On September 30, 1846 he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. Under awarding of the character as Lieutenant-General Westphal was on 13 March 1847 the statutory pension for disposition made.

After his departure, King Wilhelm I awarded him the crown of the Order Pour le Mérite on January 9, 1862, on the occasion of his 50-year ownership. He died on October 23, 1864 in Ohlau.

In his assessment of November 20, 1846, General von Lindheim wrote : Familiar with the details of the service, he leads a cavalry brigade on the parade ground very well and instructively for the subordinates, has conducted the small field service exercises well this year. A still sprightly man, punctual for all official duties and a docile subordinate. According to earlier judgments in the war, he is said to have earned the reputation of a brave and prudent officer.

family

Westphal married Leopoldine Karoline von Bergener (1786–1870) in Breslau on August 17, 1821 , divorced from Kursell . She was a daughter of Major Paul von Bergener (nobility on April 26, 1773) in the 43rd Infantry Regiment . The major adopted his son-in-law and with the name union, Westphal was raised to the hereditary Prussian nobility on May 24, 1831 as "Westphal von Bergener" .
