Agathocles is a grindcore band from Belgium . The musicians describe their style as Mincecore (from to mince : 'chop up', 'turn through the meat grinder'; to mince words : 'don't mince words ', and the ending - core ). In addition, Agathocles are known for their numerous publications. They are one of the bands with the most releases ever.

history

Jan Frederick (guitar and vocals) and Erwin (drums) have been active in the underground with various fanzines and compilation tapes since the early 1980s . In 1985 they decided to make music in the quiet of noise , Accursed Bludgeon and Hellhammer and founded Agathocles. From 1985 to 1987 the first concerts took place, including Napalm Death and Pestilence , and the first recordings that spread through tape trading in the scene. With Jakke, a third band member joined the group in 1987, so that Frederick could concentrate on the singing. From 1988 the first extended plays and split releases were brought out on various independent labels . Since then, Agathocles has released an almost unmanageable amount of publications, some self-distributed, some through labels like Morbid Records , as well as various independent labels from all over the world. Currently the band releases through Displeased Records . The line-up also changed constantly, the only constant being singer Jan Frederick.

In 1997 the band recorded a radio session ( Peel Session ) with John Peel .

After Napalm Death, Agathocles are the oldest still active Grindcore band together with Blood and Extreme Noise Terror .

Music genre

Agathocles have been playing pure grindcore since their inception, which they call mincecore. According to Agathocles' understanding, this style describes the grindcore of the 1980s with socially critical texts that disappeared from the scene in the late 1980s when many bands brought sexist and right-wing extremist topics to the scene. In part, other bands such as Unholy Grave and Archagathus took over this name. The music style never changed, even if the musical skills of the band members continued to develop. The vocals are guttural , with Frederick alternating between screaming and growling. A pitch shifter is used in some places . The texts by Agathocles are without exception political and deal with socially critical , left-wing issues. Among other things, a strong reference to time politics, especially in Belgium, the rejection of neo-Nazi ideas and a strong reference to the topics of animal rights and vegetarianism are characteristic of the band. The members of Agathocles have a strong connection to the DIY hardcore / grindcore scene and continue to believe in a network of friends and like-minded people that should replace conventional structures in the music business and make the bands more independent from the major labels .

With the Belgian black metal scene around bands like Ancient Rites and Enthroned, however, the band warred in the 1990s after Gunther Theys from Ancient Rites had played with Burt from Agathocles in the band Nuclear Domination; she accused a large part of the Belgian black metal scene of Nazi-oriented ideas. Fighting broke out between Ancient Rites and Agathocles fans, and Enthroned's Lord Sabbathan Occulta insulted Agathocles for her anti-black metal stance. In the meantime, however, Sabbathan has commented positively on the Agathocles musicians without liking Grindcore himself, and while Roel Tulleneers points out the obviously divergent ideologies in connection with Ancient Rites, the band has made Belgium more important in metal, for which they have Deserve respect; the same goes for enthroned.

Experiments in musical style only took place via side projects such as Fahrenheit AGX (political old-school hardcore and thrash metal ) and Jan Frederick's solo project Jan AG ( Cybergrind ).
