The Aggertal-Gymnasium 2019

The Aggertal-Gymnasium ( short: ATG) is located in the municipality of Engelskirchen near Cologne in the Oberbergisches Kreis . It was named after the river Agger flowing through Engelskirchen . The current school was founded in 1965 , but the history dates back to the 18th century. The grammar school in its current form consists of 65 teachers, including 7 trainee teachers, who teach around 700 students.

Student self-management

The ATG has an active student self-administration (SV for short). Through the SV, all students are represented in the participation bodies. Among the formal participation bodies, the specialist conferences can be seen at this point, in which the student representatives can exert influence as advisory members. The school conference is the highest collaborative body. At the school conference, the SV has a third of the votes. The members of the school conference are elected directly by the class representatives of all classes.
The student self-administration has a central team (SV team) every year. This team is directly elected by a general assembly of all students. The SV team is responsible for organizing events such as B. a video evening, a disco for the students, a colorful evening in which all classes are invited to participate or a political panel discussion. In addition, the SV team regularly organizes sporting events. The SV is also active in the area of social engagement.
The SV's success can be seen in the fact that the “Fata Morgana” school cafe has existed since 1997. This arose from the bread sales by the SV members. Afterwards, the development association generously supported the initial equipment. With an ABM force and a team of parents and former teachers who take turns regularly, food is offered.

Student exchange

The ATG runs an exchange program with partner schools in Plan-de-Cuques (France) and a private school in Bruges (Belgium). Every year, ATG students go to a host family for a week and receive a return visit from the partner school the following year. Every year, students in the 10th grade of the ATG complete an internship in Plan-de-Cuques. In this way, the school supports the partnership between the Engelskirchen community and the French partner community.
In the past, there was an exchange with a partner school in Saint Petersburg (Russia) and a partner school in Croydon (London, Great Britain) for many years . In the last few years another partnership with a high school in Mogilno , Poland has been established . Here, too, there are regular student exchanges to both Poland and Germany.

Working groups & other projects

The ATG has several working groups. In these working groups ( short: AG), the students create work results under the guidance of a teacher, parent or senior student. There are currently the following working groups:

School newspaper

The ATG has its own school newspaper with the title "PS", which stands for "Post Scriptum". The content is usually a sports section, a section in which the students report who are or have been abroad, and there is always a general report on the ATG in a section. It is usually published twice per school year and is sold for € 1 (for students) or € 2 (for adults). After a reorganization, the school newspaper has been renamed "Kaktus". This name has been used at times in the past.

Amateur radio - Arduino

Arduino AG has existed at Aggertal-Gymnasium since 2015, which among other things gives an insight into the areas of electronics and programming by using the Arduino platform and producing its own circuit boards. In 2018, one of the AG's projects was the production of a CNC milling machine and an autonomous robot.

Since Mr. Dittrich, head of the working group, also works as a radio amateur, the working group also provides participants with knowledge about this topic.

Both Mr. Dittrich and the deputy headmaster Mr. Baitz have training call signs for this purpose. This enables the students to become active on amateur radio under supervision even without an amateur radio license.

The working group takes place ( as of June 2020) on Tuesdays from 14:15 - 15:50 in the NW laboratory of the Aggertal high school.

Cultural projects

Since the school year 1998/99, musical projects have been tackled regularly at the ATG . It all started with “Suore Cecilia”, an adaptation of “ Sister Act ”. In 2001 an adaptation of " Grease " followed under the name "Let's Make A Musical". Finally, in October 2005, the first self-written musical had its premiere under the name "The Power Of Music". The ATG students were also allowed to present all three pieces at the school theater week in Cologne.

social commitment

Since 1995 the project “One World Circle” has been established at the school, in which teachers, parents and students are involved. The central issues of the group each month are poverty, hunger and global environmental degradation. In 1996, the “ One World Shop ” emerged from this project . Here, pupils mainly from the 1st and 2nd secondary school voluntarily sell exercise books, chocolate and coffee during their breaks .

Also since 1995 the ATG has joined the “Aktion Courage” as a subproject “School without Racism”, a title that was awarded in 1996. In recognition of its efforts, the nationwide project received the Buber Rosenzweig Medal . Numerous events are organized in monthly meetings to raise awareness of right-wing extremism, anti-Semitism and discrimination. The aim is to become a “ school without racism - school with courage ”. The project of the same name is carried out by the Aktion Courage association .

Competitions

Since 2003, the Aggertal-Gymnasium has also been successfully represented in physics competitions by four students. They were able to achieve results in the top field of participants in nationwide water rocket competitions in Duisburg and Berlin. After their first rocket "Nepomuck" followed, each time significantly improved, Nepomuck "2", Nepomuck "3" and Nepomuck "4".

The kangaroo competition arouses particular enthusiasm every year , in which almost half of the student body regularly takes part. In 2007 the school took part in the English competition " The Big Challenge " for the first time with around half of all students.

Since 2007, groups of pupils from the Aggertal-Gymnasium have regularly taken part in the robot competition of the joint initiative Future through Innovation.NRW (zdi) . Through the creative conversion of a Lego-NXT donated by the sponsoring association, appropriate solutions for the tasks set each year are developed.

Solar roof

A special feature is the solar roof , which is used to generate electricity that is fed into the local grid. In the solar roof project organized by the Wuppertal Institute , the energetic renovation of a school building using a citizen contracting model was successfully implemented for the first time in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Alumni and former staff
