history
In Roman times, the city was a fortified camp with a post office called Castra , part of the barrage of Claustra Alpium Iuliarum . The camp was located on the Via Gemina , an important connecting road to and from Italy , which led from Emona ( Ljubljana ) to Aquileia over the pass of the Birnbaumer forest . In front of the walls of Castra , on September 6, 394, the Battle of Frigidus took place, in which Emperor Theodosius I was victorious over his adversary Eugenius .
In 451 the camp was destroyed by the Huns under Attila .
In 1507 Maximilian I granted the settlement market rights , which gave the city an upswing.
At the time of Austrian rule until the end of the First World War , Ajdovščina belonged to the judicial district of Haidenschaft in the duchy of Gorizia and Gradisca , which formed part of the Austrian coastal region . During the First World War there was an airfield of the Austro-Hungarian aviation troops in the community . Subsequently, the municipality was under Italian sovereignty until 1945/1947 and belonged to the province of Gorizia (1924–1927 to the province of Udine ).
traffic
The city is on the H4 expressway that connects Nova Gorica with Ljubljana . In 1902 the town was connected to the railway at Dornberk via a branch from the Wocheinerbahn (route from Gorizia via Sežana to Trieste ) .
In the west of the city is the Ajdovščina airfield , which is mainly used by microlight aircraft and has served the local manufacturer Pipistrel as a factory airfield since 1987 .
Town twinning
The Italian partner municipality of Ajdovščina is Quiliano in Liguria .
