Carl Albrecht Leistner (born November 6, 1887 in Leipzig ; † October 24, 1950 there ) was a painter , graphic artist and sculptor .

Life

family

Albrecht Leistner was the son of the scale manufacturer Emil Leistner (1843-1911) and his wife Hedwig, née Reuschel (1852-1932). In 1909 he married Hermine Kiessig (1887–1964), the daughter of a Leipzig hotel owner. The marriage resulted in two daughters and a son:

  • Leonore (1910-1997)
  • Siegfried (1914–1970)
  • Isolde (1920–1989)

education

After attending the community school and the secondary school , the young Albrecht initially accompanied his father on extensive trips, both of which led to all of Germany, the Scandinavian countries and Tyrol . In 1905 he went on an educational trip to Italy lasting several months . Here his decision matured to devote himself entirely to art. The Leipzig illustrator Fedor Flinzer taught him the basics of drawing. At the Leipzig Art Academy were Alois Kolb and Adolf Lehnert his teachers. He then studied anatomy for two semesters and continued his self-taught education .

Creating art

As a freelance artist, the enthusiastic mountaineer initially devoted himself to painting high mountains. He achieved his first success as a painter in 1902 at the World Exhibition in Turin , where he was awarded a bronze medal .

In his hometown he was one of the founding members of the Leipzig Secession in 1910 and initiated the Leipzig annual art exhibitions with his friend Max Klinger . He was also a member of the German Association of Artists in Weimar .

Klinger inspired him to do his first sculptural work , which from then on should become his actual form of artistic expression. His first work, a Richard Wagner head, was made of bronze and plaster of paris in 1911 and sold very successfully by the art dealer PH Beyer & Sohn. On the occasion of the 1914 world exhibition for book trade and graphics, he created two groups of nudes , called printing and etching . The allegories were very popular because of their humorous presentation.

His artistic work was interrupted by the First World War. As a soldier at the front , he experienced the hell of Verdun . He artistically processed the horrors of war in 50 lithographs , which he published as a portfolio under the title Seven Months Before Verdun 1916. Experiences from the field in 50 stone drawings told by Albrecht Leistner in a limited edition of 100 pieces.

Leistner experienced the peak of his work in the 1920s. Monuments, busts and statues in bronze and marble , reliefs and plaques as well as tombs were created in large numbers. However, Leistner got into financial difficulties as a result of the global economic crisis , so that he had to sell his house, which also housed his studio .

Due to his critical stance on National Socialism , his works were no longer shown at major art exhibitions in Munich and Leipzig. On December 4, 1943, his studio in Leipzig was badly damaged by aerial bombers. In 1944, a large part of his outsourced works were destroyed as a result of further war effects.

The artist, who had suffered badly from gout for a long time and was therefore unable to work, died a few years after the end of the war. He was buried in the Kiessig-Leistner family grave, with the artistic design of which Reinhold Carl had been commissioned at the time, in the Südfriedhof in Leipzig.
