Alexander Mitsch (2019)

Alexander Mitsch (* 1967 in Heidelberg ) is a German CDU politician . He is the founder and chairman of the Values Union , an association closely related to the CDU but not recognized by the party as a party branch . He is the founder of the Konrads Erben association founded by former Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung scholarship holders .

Life

Mitsch attended the Hebel-Gymnasium in Schwetzingen and then completed vocational training as a banker at Deutsche Bank in Mannheim. This was followed by a degree in business administration at the University of Mannheim , which he completed with a degree in business administration. Mitsch works for SRH Holding . His previous positions included investor relations and corporate communications . Since October 1, 2010, he has been responsible for the finance and M&A divisions . Mitsch lives in Plankstadt , he has two children.

Mitsch is a member of the Rotary Club Mannheim-Brücke, a member of the district board of the Mittelstandsvereinigung Heidelberg and a sustaining member of the Mannheim-Ludwigshafen Business Juniors.

Political activity

Mitsch joined the CDU Baden-Württemberg at the age of 15 . He got involved in the Junge Union and was elected district chairman in North Baden and deputy chairman of the CDU district association Rhein-Neckar . He was also a member of the municipal council of his home town of Plankstadt. For professional and family reasons he then withdrew from politics. From July 2017 to October 2019 Mitsch was again a member of the CDU district executive as an assessor.

In October 2015 Mitsch founded the conservative Konrads Erben circle with several previous fellows from the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung . In February 2016 he co-founded the citizens' initiative Aufbruch 2016 in Schwetzingen. In March 2017, he founded the Association of Freedom-Conservative Awakening in the Union (FKA, today: ValuesUnion ) in Schwetzingen , of which he has been chairman since then. On June 15, 2019, he was elected chairman for a further two years. With this interest group, which meanwhile has 3700 members, he is primarily pursuing the goal of reflecting on the so-called core brand of the CDU. In connection with this initiative, he became known nationwide, among other things with demands for resignation against Chancellor Angela Merkel .

In February 2020, it became known in the press that Mitsch had received threats in the form of "hate letters with a hint of gun violence". The state security and the police assumed "serious threats from left-wing extremists".

Political positions

Mitsch's political demands since 2017 have included turning away from liberal refugee policy, for example through the creation of transit zones to clarify the identity of migrants, the rejection of same-sex marriage , the reintroduction of compulsory military service , the restriction of early sexualization in educational institutions and the significant reduction in abortions . The founding program of the initiative also called for the suspension of aid programs for Greece and the permanent termination of EU accession negotiations with Turkey.

Mitsch has been calling for Chancellor Merkel to resign since 2017; When it comes to the question of a successor, Mitsch supports a large number of possible candidates from the CDU and CSU. He also calls for a primary election (membership decision) for the coalition agreement and, in case of doubt, pleads for a CDU-led minority government . Mitsch criticizes attempts to open the CDU towards left party positions or even national coalitions. He does not see the SPD and the Greens as “natural cooperation partners” of the CDU.

In terms of content, Mitsch is behind the former President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution , Maaßen , who is also a member of the Values Union.

According to Spiegel Online , Mitsch argues with regard to climate policy "similar to the climate change deniers in the USA or European right-wing populists ". Together with Hans-Georg Maaßen , he gave an interview to the "European Institute for Climate & Energy" EIKE .

Proximity to AfD / new right groups

Due to their positions, Mitsch and the ValuesUnion are sometimes criticized for being close to politically right-wing people and content. Mitsch and the WertUnion emphasize their demarcation z. B. from the AfD , but at the same time he said, "Positions are not automatically wrong because the AfD takes them." The AfD has taken positions that the CDU and CSU would have represented ten years ago, for example on the subject of migration. Mitsch rejects cooperation with the AfD. However, one should not ignore the AfD or insult its members and voters, but rather clarify in dialogue why it is "the wrong party" and not a possible coalition partner.

AfD members are also not allowed to become members of the Values Union. In February 2020, after a meeting of the federal board of the values union, Mitsch announced their decision: “The values union rejects a cooperation with the AfD and the left party and has never called for a cooperation. She is fully behind the relevant decisions of the CDU federal party congress. ”The decision was made at Mitsch's suggestion:“ The AfD represents positions that are incompatible with our goals and values. ”In August 2020, several state chairmen left the union of values . Among other things, this resignation was justified by the fact that the distance to the AfD was implausible and there was no freedom of expression within the union of values. "AfD friends and shrill tones" would have won the upper hand. In addition, the "AfD-affiliated NRW association dominates the federal board." Mitsch denied the representations, although the inclusion of Vera Lengsfeld, according to the former board members, stands for a rapprochement with the AfD, since she had advertised a "bourgeois coalition of CDU and AfD".

In 2014 Mitsch donated 20 euros to the AfD, and in December 2016, just under four months before the values union was founded, he donated 100 euros. During the Greek sovereign debt crisis he even thought about joining, but "encounters with and statements by AfD people" were so deterring for him that by founding the values union he had "a clear edge against the increasingly influential right-wing radicalism in the AfD" want to show. In April 2016 there should have been another transfer to the AfD. With the purpose "Registration BPT Stuttgart" a small amount was transferred to the AfD. Mitsch explained to Die Zeit that it could be that his mother attended this party conference.

Journalism

Alexander Mitsch has been the author of The European magazine since September 24, 2018 . In 2018 he published two articles in Cicero magazine . An interview published on February 12, 2019 was followed by a guest article by Mitsch on July 25, 2019 in the weekly magazine Focus with the headline “Demarcation, no exclusion”: WertUnion boss says how AfD should become superfluous .
