Alexander Soranto Neu (born March 19, 1969 in Harmonie , Eitorf municipality ) is a political scientist and German politician of the Die Linke party . He has been a member of the German Bundestag since the 2013 federal election .

Life and education

Neu was born to Yugoslav parents in southern North Rhine-Westphalia and adopted by a German couple. He grew up in Much and attended secondary school there . After graduating from high school in 1990 at the Anno-Gymnasium in Siegburg , which he had attended since 1987, he studied political science in Bonn ; he completed this course in 1995. In 2004, Neu received his doctorate in political science with a thesis on Yugoslavia war reporting by the Times and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . In his dissertation he came to the conclusion that the reporting in the Times and the FAZ differ only slightly. According to this, both newspapers would portray states as the central actors in international affairs and attribute conflicts primarily to ethnocentric differences. He has also published several academic articles on foreign and security policy to date.

Party membership and political career

He was initially involved in the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party , from which he resigned in 2005; then he became a member of the PDS , which in 2007 became the Left Party. From 2006 to 2013, Neu was a security policy officer for the left-wing parliamentary group in the Bundestag .

Alexander Neu stood in the federal election on September 22, 2013 as a direct candidate of the left in the constituency Rhein-Sieg-Kreis I ; as the fourth-best candidate in the constituency, he achieved 4.7 percent of all first votes. He was also at number 10 on the North Rhine-Westphalian state list of the left. In the election he was able to enter the German Bundestag via the state list. New is the chairman of the Defense Committee of the German Bundestag and a deputy member of the Foreign Affairs Committee .

In August 2016, Neu said on Deutschlandfunk about the activities of the PKK in Turkey: “One can argue about whether this is terrorism or not. One can also speak of state terrorism. ”In 2017, this led to a Bundestag delegation, including Neu, being banned from visiting the German soldiers in Konya, Turkey .

New and other left-wing politicians such as Diether Dehm and Niema Movassat appear as guests on the Russian state broadcaster Russia Today . At Russia Today, Neu regularly calls for the liberation of Germany from "US dependency". Instead, a common security policy should be built from Lisbon to Vladivostok . The reaction of the German federal government to the downing of the passenger aircraft Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was recently criticized . In his opinion, the blame was placed on Russia "solely on the basis of wild speculation". According to the Russian newspaper Izvestia , Neu and other members of the Bundestag left, as well as politicians from the Lega Nord and MoVimento 5 Stelle, announced that they would visit the Crimean peninsula. In 2018 MPs from the AfD , the FPÖ as well as Neu and other representatives of the left were invited to an economic forum on the annexed Crimean peninsula. A new speaker was announced, which he confirmed when asked by Welt Online . A spokeswoman for the left faction said, however, that to the best of her knowledge, no MP from the left faction would accept the invitation. During the Russian-Ukrainian confrontation in the Black Sea in November 2018, Neu compared Ukrainian self-determination as follows: "The sovereignty of Ukraine is roughly equivalent to the sovereignty of a three-year-old child, depending on its mother." In his opinion, the European Union and NATO support the Blame for the Russian annexation of Crimea , the war in eastern Ukraine and the Ukrainian-Russian clash in the Black Sea. In addition, Neu believes that Russia has fulfilled its obligations under the Minsk II Agreement. Neu himself does not use the expression "annexation of the Crimea"; it was not an annexation , but a secession . He rejects the EU sanctions against Russia.
