Alexandra von Berckholtz (born August 26, 1821 in Riga ; † March 16, 1899 in Munich ) was a German-Baltic painter who mainly created portraits and still lifes .

Life

In 1825 her family emigrated from Riga and settled in Baden after five years of traveling around Europe . Berckholtz grew up in Karlsruhe and at Ortenberg Castle near Offenburg , which her father, Baron Gabriel Leonhard von Berckholtz (1781–1863), had Friedrich Eisenlohr rebuild from 1833 to 1843 .

She received her artistic training from Louis Wagner in Karlsruhe in 1841 , from Joseph Nicolas Robert-Fleury in Paris in 1848 and from the Hohenzollern court painter Richard Lauchert in Karlsruhe in 1854 . In 1854 he also portrayed Alexandra von Berckholtz in a large-format knee-length piece, which shows his pupil sitting in front of a landscape with a drawing pad. Presumably she was also a student of Franz Xaver Winterhalter , Ludwig des Coudres and Hans Canon . Berckholtz set up a studio on a tower of Ortenberg Castle, the so-called Malerturm .

In 1865 she went to Munich, where she was influenced by Franz von Lenbach , representatives of the Piloty School such as Alexander von Liezen-Mayer , the flower painter Therese Hegg and the still life painter Adam Kurz . She mainly painted representative personalities of society as well as family members, with a focus on women. In addition, he created still lifes in oil and tempera as well as numerous pastels and watercolors. In 1880 she donated the glass painting Christ on the Cross for St. Peter's Church in Riga.
