action

Elli, couples therapist and author of the bestseller Nothing But Truth , and her husband Robert have been separated for three years. With their former affairs, the 22-year-old driving instructor Micha and the office assistant Chrissi, the two have now found new happiness - only their children Susanna, Tobias and Leonie still believe that they will continue to live happily under one roof.

When the family arrives at their parents' house for Christmas, Elli and Robert want to pretend the family idyll under the tree again, but Micha and Chrissi thwart their plans: They want to spend Christmas Eve together with their partners and also nestle in the common home . While Robert is bowing to the situation and confessing to his children about the separation, Elli makes every attempt to cover up the truth and introduces Micha and Chrissi to the children as a friendly couple who will spend the holidays with them.

But even the children are simply staging an "ideal world" for their parents: daughter Susanna and husband Heiner have just gone bankrupt with their car dealership and are hoping for a financial injection from their parents for the new start; The homosexual Tobias pretends to be a studied musician, but in truth earns his living as a composer of advertising jingles and baby Leonie only reveals to her brother Tobias that she is pregnant without knowing the identity of the child's father.

Robert's friend Chrissi insists that the façade of lies should finally be torn down, but is unsuccessful. Because Robert indirectly proposes marriage to her at the evening presents by pretending that Micha is the one handing her an engagement ring. But soon the farce threatens to be finally exposed. The emotions boil up, and gradually all the little secrets come to light. In a rage, Susanna and husband Heiner and a short time later Tobias and Leonie leave the apartment to leave. After Elli fails to jump over her shadow and stand by her love with driving instructor Micha, he too leaves the house with Robert.

Elli and Chrissi stay behind and find a way to talk to each other. To save Christmas, the two women now drive after their husbands. They landed on the slippery road in front of a Chinese snack bar in which they see Tobias and Leonie sitting. They sit down and Robert succeeds in encouraging his daughter about her pregnancy. Now Susanna and Heiner arrive with the two children after they see Elli arrive before the snack bar. In front of the assembled family, Elli reports that she has been separated from Robert for a long time and confesses her sincere love for Micha.

At the end, the audience sees a scene that takes place "a year later": Everyone has returned to Ellis' house for Christmas, but this time they seem reconciled. Leonie, who is now a mother, and the rest of the family watch as Elli presents her new book Young Man Wanted to Travel on TV , which tells of the motorcycle trip of a mature woman with a younger man through the Sahara.

Reviews

“Where in other ARD family films the narrative salvation is sought in the transfiguration and outdated values, this production is surprisingly progressive”, judged Julian Miller fromquote meter and wrote: “The heart of Alle unter ein Tanne is of course the comedic tones who especially like the great enthusiasm of the cast and especially Michael Gwisdek. Initially designed as a role-swapping comedy, the script unfortunately quickly reaches the limits of its inventiveness. And yet: The accomplished and comedically not untalented actors still find a lot of space here to help with cheeky punchlines, as best they can, over the less entertaining stretches [...] For a nice Christmas film, which is primarily nice wants to be, one should meet the demands. "

Gaby Dohm received positive reviews for her portrayal.

Ulrich Feld from the Frankfurter Neue Presse found the production “well played and definitely not a film to feel good about”. The story is "quite funny in terms of its basic idea and course. The individual scenes, however, lack the expected satirical bite in their course [...] The fact that the film still works quite well despite these shortcomings is due in particular to the cast. Gaby Dohm in particular shows an astonishing degree of enthusiasm for playing and brings out the contemplative and reflective moments of the story very well, which helps the film over its weaker points. The dialogues are very realistic. "

Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung -Renzensent Ulrich Schilling-Strack described Alle unter ein Tanne as “one of the really impressive” productions among the numerous annual Christmas comedies: “As expected, the tree is on fire, of course in the literal sense, as it would be for a decent comedy heard. After that it gets a bit reflective, even a bit moral, and that should happen at Christmas in the best families, but the story doesn't skid because of the emergency braking, "he wrote and summed up:" Hats off, a successful Christmas film without it Sentimental spice, but with an excellent cast of actors, funny dialogues and laconic wit. Only a small hang shortly before the last act prevents the full score. "

"Director Oliver Schmitz has shot a nice comedy with a good pinch of satire full of witty language and situation comedy, although some things seem a bit as recited", criticized dpa . “The plot is of course quite alien, because nobody would build such a strenuous building of lies. But it is teeming with hearty dialogues from the pen of Lo Malinke. ” On the other hand, TV Spielfilm rated the film negatively and wrote:“ During the rest of the year, this family does not seem to have any telephone or other contacts. Sure, even an absurd plot can be entertaining, but stale jokes are annoying here - be careful, this film needs to be ahead of time! "
