Alwernia [ al'vɛrɲa ] is a town in Poland in the powiat Chrzanowski in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship , 36 km west of Krakow . It is the seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name with around 12,650 inhabitants. The place has a large chemical plant and is a recreation and tourist center.
history
The name of the city comes from the hermitage of St. Francis of Assisi in La Verna ( Toscana ) and was given by the bailiff Krzysztof Koryciński in 1616 in the north-western part of the village of Poręba Żegoty . A St. Bernard monastery was built on a hill from 1625 to 1656 . The church was built between 1630 and 1676.
A place developed below the monastery. In 1776 the place got the right to hold a market and in 1796 it was mentioned as a (small) economic and administrative center. When Poland was partitioned for the third time in 1795, Alwernia became part of the Habsburg Empire . In the years 1815-1846 the village belonged to the Republic of Krakow , in 1846 it was annexed again as part of the Grand Duchy of Krakow to the countries of the Austrian Empire. From 1855 Alwernia belonged to the Chrzanów District .
In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Alwernia became part of Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II . It then belonged to the district of Krenau in the administrative district of Katowice in the province of Silesia (since 1941 province of Upper Silesia )
In 1926 a chemical plant was built in the south of the village; 2003 the largest factory in town.
Due to the charming surroundings and the proximity to Krakow , the place developed and in 1993 it was granted city rights.
