GDR football league 1971/72

The GDR Oberliga 1972/73 was the 24th edition of the top division of the GDR . The SG Dynamo Dresden became champion for the third time . The season began on September 16, 1972 and ended on June 23, 1973.

Season course

The three dominating teams in GDR football in the 1970s Dynamo Dresden, Carl Zeiss Jena and 1. FC Magdeburg made the first three places among themselves this time. Dresden took on a dominant role and was consistently at the top of the table from the fourth game day. In the end, Dynamo achieved 42 plus points - an average of 1.62 points per game, which was a new league record at the time. The 61 goals scored (2.35 per game) by Dresden were also the best average since 1960 (at that time Vorwärts Berlin scored 73 goals in 26 games). Because of these achievements, Dynamo was chosen as the second league team (after Rostock 1961) to the sports team of the year .

Despite this dominance, Dresden only secured the championship on the penultimate matchday. The reason for this was the equally strong Jenenser, who from the seventh matchday on were close behind Dresden in second place. The gap to third Magdeburg, who had already won the cup during the season, was correspondingly large, so that second place in the UEFA Cup went to fourth in the table. This was won by 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, which overtook FC Karl-Marx-Stadt on the last match day.

The fight against relegation was ultimately decided between Rot-Weiß Erfurt, Union Berlin and HFC Chemie. Halle was on a non-relegation zone for a long time and only slipped shortly before the end. On the last day of the match, the “chemists” had the worst starting position and were relegated after a 4: 5 against Magdeburg. 1. FC Union, who were twelfth ahead of Erfurt before the match day, had to be overtaken by a defeat in Jena and a simultaneous away win for Erfurt in Frankfurt.

Gameday). The biggest win was Lokomotive Leipzig's 8: 0 against HFC Chemie on matchday ten.

Hans-Jürgen Kreische from SG Dynamo Dresden was top scorer in the league for the third time in a row , an achievement that apart from Kreische only Torsten Gütschow achieved. His 26 goals also meant the second best goal average (one goal per game) of all time behind Johannes Schöne , who won the top scorer's crown in the 1950/51 season. In the league seasons with 14 teams, the 26 goals remained unmatched.

    soccer player of the year

After the season, top scorer Hans-Jürgen Kreische was also named Footballer of the Year 1973 by SG Dynamo Dresden . It was the first (and only) honor with this title for Screeches. Peter Ducke from FC Carl Zeiss Jena and Joachim Streich from 1. FC Magdeburg landed on the seats .

    FDGB Cup

The FDGB-Pokal was won this season by 1. FC Magdeburg. For Magdeburg it was the fourth cup triumph. In the final, which took place between the 18th and 19th matchdays, Lokomotive Leipzig was defeated. The cup defender Jena was eliminated in the second round. The future champions Dresden lost to Leipzig in the quarter-finals.

    International competitions

For most of the GDR participants, it was only enough to win the European Cup this season. In the second round of the European Champions Cup, Magdeburg was only barely defeated by the later finalists Juventus Turin (each 0: 1 in the two legs). Jena also failed in the European Cup Winners' Cup in the second round because of the later finalists. After a 0-0 home win against Leeds United , the English rivals prevailed 2-0 in the second leg. In the UEFA Cup , the BFC Dynamo and Dynamo Dresden were represented a little longer, but were both subject to the eventual cup winners Liverpool FC in the third round (Berlin) and in the quarter-finals (Dresden). As in previous years, the GDR did not take part in the Intertoto Cup this time , which was played before the season.
