It is the successor to the Amsterdam 700 Tournament , which was held for the first time in 1975 on the occasion of the 700th birthday of the city of Amsterdam. After that it was held annually until 1992. It was not until 1999 that the tournament was held under the name Amsterdam Tournament .

history

1975–1992: Amsterdam 700 Tournament to Amsterdam 717 Tournament

The Amsterdam 700 Tournament, as it was called back then, was held in 1975 for the 700th anniversary of the city of Amsterdam . Teams from the very beginning were hosts Ajax Amsterdam , the Belgian club RWD Molenbeek , the Spanish club FC Barcelona and Ajax league competitor Feyenoord Rotterdam . In the opening game on August 8, 1975 Molenbeek and Feyenoord met. The game ended 1-1. The tournament's first scorer was the future Hertha BSC attacker Jørgen Kristensen , who scored for Rotterdam before Jacques Teugels equalized this goal. In the very first match in the competition, the penalty shoot-out had to decide on the final. The winner was the Belgian team from RWD Molenbeek. In the second game it was the hosts who beat Barcelona 3-1. Two days later, on August 10, 1975, the referee whistled for the game for third place before the final match was played. In this final it was Molenbeek that beat Amsterdam 5-2. It was 2-2 up to the 86th minute before Gerard Desanghere , Eric Dumon and Jacques Teugels decided the match for their club. For the following year, the tournament was now called the Amsterdam 701 Tournament, Borussia Mönchengladbach was the first German club to take part in the competition. In the semi-final game, Borussia coach Udo Lattek's team lost to Ajax Amsterdam after a penalty and had to take part in the game for third place. There you met the first English representative at the competition, Leeds United . In this game, Herbert Heidenreich scored the first goal for a German club in the third minute after they were already 0-1 behind. In the 64th minute he made it 3-2. Next to him, Herbert Wimmer met for the foals . Heidenreich could have been the first double goal scorer in a game at the Amsterdam Tournament. On the side of the English club, however, it was Edwin Gray who only netted for his team in the first and in the 62nd minute and was thus the first double scorer of the competition. Shortly before the end, Allan Clarke was successful for Leeds, so that Gladbach only found success on penalties. In the final game, Ajax Amsterdam could have won the title of the domestic tournament for the first time in the second attempt. However, they failed at RSC Anderlecht with 1: 3. The first non-Belgian club to prevail in the competition after no Belgian club was invited was AZ Alkmaar in 1977 , after victories over Liverpool FC and the hosts. For the first time, a club that is not based in Europe was invited to the Amsterdam 703 Tournament 1978. The Brazilian club Fluminense Rio de Janeiro then lost in the semi-final against Ajax and also in the game for third place after they were tied 2-2, always after penalties. The first semi-final between AZ Alkmaar and RSC Anderlecht already ended 2-2, and the final also ended with the same result, so that four goals were scored in each game and all encounters were 2-2. In the final, Ajax managed to prevail against Anderlecht on penalties, so they were able to take revenge for their defeat in the 1976 final. In the following year, a German club, Hamburger SV, took part for the second time, but only finished last. AZ Alkmaar was the winner and thus the only club with two competition successes up to now. In 1979, FC Bayern Munich was invited. But just like the previous clubs, it was only enough for third place. Alkmaar reached the final again, but had to admit defeat to Ajax Amsterdam, who also had two tournament wins. The Dutch series was supposed to travel to the Amsterdam 706 Tournament. With Ipswich Town , an English club won the tournament for the first time. For the first time in the competition there was no Dutch club in the final. After Ipswich beat hosts Ajax Amsterdam 3-1 in the semifinals, they beat Standard Liège 2-0 in the final . In 1982 1. FC Köln was the fourth German Bundesliga club to be invited by Ajax. Again, it was only enough for the German team to take third place. Alkmaar won the tournament and screwed its successes to three tournament victories. It was to be Alkmaar's last win in this competition. For the first time since 1975, Feyenoord Rotterdam was invited again in 1983, who also secured the title that year. As defending champion Feyenoord went to the Amsterdam 709 Tournament in 1984, but was eliminated in the semifinals against Atlético Mineiro , the second non-European club in the tournament's history. Atlético then became the first club winner in this competition, which does not play in a European league, with a win from a penalty kick. The following year, the team came back to the final but Ajax had to admit defeat 1: 4 after goals from Frank Rijkaard , Ronald Koeman , John van 't Schip and Marco van Basten . In 1986 another newcomer won the tournament. Dynamo Kiev prevailed in the semifinals after beating Manchester United 1: 1 and won against Botafogo FR with their highest final win of 6: 0 . These were the third Brazilian club in the competition after Atlético Mineiro and Fluminense Rio de Janeiro. By 1992, the last Amsterdam Tournament for the time being, Ajax Amsterdam won the tournament three more times. In 1989 and 1990 KV Mechelen and FC Brugge from Belgium won. Sampdoria Genoa achieved success in 1988 and was the first Italian club to prevail. The last German participant was Borussia Dortmund in 1992 .

1999 to present: Amsterdam Tournament

In 1999 the Amsterdam Tournament was revived. In a changed tournament mode, four teams were still invited to qualify for the final via semi-finals. However, each team earned additional points by self-scored hits. This means that every goal is only counted as an extra point at the beginning of the game. If a team wins 3: 1, it receives three points for the win and three extra points for the number of goals, and goes out of the game with a total of six points. The opponent, however, receives one point. All teams are compared in a table at the end of the tournament and the winner is determined.

The first tournament after the reintroduction was held on July 31st and August 1st, 1999. For the first time, two non-European teams, FC Santos and Atlético Mineiro , took part in this competition. Lazio was the first winner. In 2000 FC Barcelona won . Between 2001 and 2004 the host won all four tournaments. In 2004 an Argentinian club took part for the first time with CA River Plate . From 2005 to 2008, English teams won the tournament four times in a row. The dominating factor here was Arsenal FC , which won three times. When they won in 2007 they prevailed 1-0 in the decisive game against Ajax. At that time , the former German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was in the Gunners ' squad . So far the last winner was Benfica Lisbon 2009, who beat Ajax Amsterdam, AFC Sunderland and Atlético Madrid . In 2010 the competition was not held. Chelsea FC has already been invited, but the club's board of directors canceled the traditional tournament. The reason was the host's participation in the UEFA Champions League qualification in the summer.

Attendees

The host Ajax Amsterdam and three different teams always take part in the tournament. The following international top clubs have participated since 1999: Arsenal FC , Milan AC , CA River Plate , Boca Juniors , Barcelona FC , Galatasaray Istanbul , Manchester United , Liverpool FC , Inter Milan , Lazio Rome , Panathinaikos Athens , FC Porto , FC Santos , FC Sevilla , Sunderland AFC , FC Parma , Valencia and the Portuguese champions Benfica .

Game mode

The tournament consists of four matches, with one team only playing against two of the three generic teams. All games will take place in the Amsterdam Arena (called Amsterdam ArenA until 2018), hosted by Ajax Amsterdam.

The distribution of points is unique in the tournament: there are 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat, but there is an extra point for every goal scored.
