The district of Ananea is located in the province of San Antonio de Putina in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district was founded on May 2, 1854. It has an area of ​​965 km². The 2017 census counted 12,615 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 8,452, in 2007 it was 20,572. The administrative seat of the district is the village of Ananea at an altitude of 4660  m with 1729 inhabitants (as of 2017). Ananea is 45 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Putina . There is a large mining center in the district.

Geographical location

The district of Ananea is located in the central east of the province of San Antonio de Putina on the southern flank of the Cordillera Carabaya . The mountains reach a height of 5852  m in the northeast of the district in the Nevado Ananea Grande . The upper reaches of the Río Ramis (also Río Crucero or Río Grande) flows through the district in a westerly direction. In the far east, on the Bolivian border, lies the Laguna Suches lake . This and the adjacent area are drained via the Río Suches .

The district of Ananea borders in the south on the districts Cojata ( province Huancané ) and Quilcapuncu , in the west on the district Putina , in the extreme northwest on the district Crucero ( province Carabaya ), in the north on the districts Cuyocuyo and Quiaca (both in the province Sandia) ), in the northeast to the Sina district and in the east to the Bolivian province of Franz Tamayo .
