Helwig ran Greek and German language studies in Greifswald and corresponded with Lorenz Rhodomann (1546–1606). The general superintendent Barthold von Krakevitz recommended him "because of his ingenious poetry" to the Princely Councilor Reimer Seltrecht, who crowned him with the laurel in 1607 .

In 1612 he went to Berlin , where he was rector of the grammar school for the gray monastery . Duke Adolf Friedrich I of Mecklenburg appointed him to the University of Rostock in 1615 . There he was a professor of poetry in the philosophy faculty. The academic chair, however, did not accept him. Therefore, in 1616 he accepted the rectorate of the Stralsund high school that was offered to him.

He held this office from 1617 to 1643. While he was exposed to anonymous hostility at the beginning, he gained general recognition over time through his work. Contemporaries gave him the honorary name "communis Pomeraniae praeceptor". During Helwig's tenure in 1619/20, the plague in Stralsund claimed more than three thousand deaths and in 1624 the Johanniskloster burned down . In addition, Stralsund was besieged in 1628 by Wallenstein's troops in the Thirty Years' War . Nevertheless, he managed to maintain a largely continuous school operation, which is proven by the number of students and numerous foundations in favor of the grammar school. He introduced a prima and in 1627 recorded the official establishment of a grammar school library. Helwig also wrote numerous occasional poems .

Andreas Helvigius died at the age of 71, shortly after he was ceremonially retired by the Stralsund superintendent Balthasar Rhaw .
