Andreas Schager (born September 14, 1971 as Andreas Schagerl in Rohrbach an der Gölsen , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian opera singer ( hero tenor ).

Life

After his first appearances with the Vienna Singing Academy , Schager began studying singing with Walter Moore at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and made his operatic debut as Ferrando ( Così fan tutte ) at the Schlosstheater Schönbrunn while he was still studying . Then he was engaged as a lyric operetta tenor at the Theater Krefeld and Mönchengladbach .

Schager then sang the lyric subject in Bologna , Frankfurt , Vienna , Gent and at the Royal Opera Canada. He appeared as Tamino in the Magic Flute , David in the Meistersingern , Max in Freischütz and Florestan in Fidelio . He can now be heard primarily in Wagner roles such as Siegmund, Siegfried or Tristan , but also as Rienzi ( Deutsche Oper Berlin ).

He sang Rienzi with Simone Young in the Hamburg State Opera and in Rome with Stefan Soltesz . A close collaboration with Daniel Barenboim led him to La Scala in Milan and the BBC Proms in London in 2013 . Since 2015 he has been in the ensemble of the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden . In May 2015 Schager made his debut as Parsifal also under Daniel Barenboim , then under Franz Welser-Möst in Cleveland and New York as Apollo in Richard Strauss ' Daphne . In 2015 he sang his first Tannhäuser in the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp . In 2016 he made his debut as Erik in the Flying Dutchman at the Bayreuth Festival , where he also performed a performance of Parsifal for the sick Klaus Florian Vogt . For 2018/19 he is also cast as Parsifal in Bayreuth. As Siegfried ( Götterdämmerung ) he is a frequent guest at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg under Valery Gergiev . In this role he also appeared for the first time under Johannes Debus at the COC Toronto.

Schager also sang Mahler's 8th Symphony under Riccardo Chailly in Lucerne and the Gurre-Lieder in the Philharmonie in Paris under Philippe Jordan . Under Gustav Kuhn he sang Gustav Mahler's Lied von der Erde at the South Tyrolean Festival in Toblach . He was heard in Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the Bamberg Symphony under Jonathan Nott . He made his debut at the Warsaw Philharmonic with Arnold Schönberg's Gurre-Lieder . Under Marek Janowski Schager made his debut at the Spring Festival in Tokyo in 2016 as Siegfried in Siegfried .

Schager made his debut with Apollo in Daphne on December 1, 2017 at the Vienna State Opera . It was there that he received outstanding reviews in 2018 for his portrayal of Max in Der Freischütz .

In 2019 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC. Schager embodied both Siegfrieds in the Ring of the Nibelung.
