Andrew James "AJ" Ogilvy (born June 17, 1988 in Sydney , New South Wales ) is an Australian - Irish basketball player . After studying in the United States , Ogilvy has played as a professional in Europe so far. The Australian national player played for the former German double winner Brose Baskets Bamberg in the 2012/13 basketball Bundesliga . For the following season he signed a contract with the Sydney Kings in his country of birth.

Career

Ogilvy went to the United States to study at Vanderbilt University in Nashville ( Tennessee ) in 2007 . There he played for the college team Commodores in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . At the Commodores , Ogilvy got a lot of working time as a freshman , as the Commodores had few alternatives in the long positions in the front court , and was soon considered a possible draft pick of the highest endowed professional league National Basketball Association (NBA). However, Ogilvy played two more seasons for the Commodores before signing up for the NBA draft in 2010 , where he was ultimately not selected by an NBA club. With the Commodores, he reached the national NCAA finals twice ; In 2008 they were eliminated in the first round against the lower- rated Saints of Siena College, led by the later Bundesliga basketball player Kenny Hasbrouck , and in 2010 they were also surprisingly defeated in the first round with just one point against the racers from Murray State University .

After Ogilvy was not selected in the 2010 NBA draft , he began his professional career at Beşiktaş Cola Turka in Istanbul . With Beşiktaş he finished sixth in the final table and was eliminated in the first play-off round for the championship. In the Eurocup 2010/11 they prevailed in the qualification against the German representative Skyliners Frankfurt , but retired despite the temporary reinforcement of the former NBA all-star Allen Iverson in the preliminary group against the BG 74 Göttingen, among others . At the Oceania Basketball Championship 2011 they won the play-off finals straight against New Zealand , against which they had lost the Oceania Championship two years earlier, and qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. For the following season 2011/12 Ogilvy moved to the Spanish ACB league for the club from Valencia . As Ogilvy is Irish national , the Australian international played here under an Irish license in order to fall under less restrictive alien restrictions for EU citizens. With the Spaniards he reached the final of the Eurocup 2011/12 for the third time in their club history; the Russian representative BK Chimki prevented the third triumph of Valencia in front of their home crowd with a 77-68 final victory. However, Ogilvy was only used in six European Cup games with an average playing time of a good 15 minutes per game and was not used after the quarter-finals. In the Spanish championship they were eliminated in the semi-final series against the defending champion and later champions FC Barcelona .

In May 2012 still represented in the preliminary roster for the 2012 Olympic Games, Ogilvy did not make it into the final roster for the 2012 Olympic tournament despite the injury to NBA player Andrew Bogut . For the basketball Bundesliga 2012/13 Ogilvy was then signed by the former German double winner Brose Baskets from Bamberg . After an injury in the pre-season, Ogilvy did not get enough match practice and after recovering from additional commitments slipped temporarily from the Bamberg squad due to restrictions on the foreigner positions, which is why he only had seven appearances in the regular season. Although the Bamberg team reached the second group stage of the 16 best teams in the highest European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2012/13 , where they remained without a win, and reached the play-offs for the championship again as first in the main round, but Ogilvy signed after his short playing time for Brose Baskets signed a follow-up contract with the Sydney Kings in his home country at an early stage.
